About this deal

Minor cons, the ending leaving you hanging (this is volume one), no page numbers, and no written intro from the author or anyone. I only dock off a point because many sections feel like they're setting up for something big, and while the payoff is great, the setup does take a bit of a slog to get through. The comic book series The Fantastic Four has two eras that allow it to rightfully claim the title of "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine": the first hundred issues published throughout the '60s and early '70s, plotted and illustrated by Jack Kirby (coplotted by Stan Lee), and issues 232–293 in the early to mid-'80s, written and illustrated by John Byrne.

He is known for creating the Image Comics series The Nightly News, The Manhattan Projects and East of West, as well as working on Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, FF, and S. For someone so good at rattling off science jargon to make Reed and the family seem smart, he still finds time for little moments of levity and heart, that I tend to overlook after my first read through, but loved catching this time. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. That's the crazy part: after all the great ideas Hickman puts out here, you realize this is only the first half of his run. One of the greatest comics period, the way it all bends so seamlessly and all the plots come together so well, existing concepts are used in such a brilliant manner and then each character gets their own spotlight and moment that makes you love them even more and the inter-play between them and finally the big thing to come, its just perfect plus it has a murderer's row of artist, each one soo perfect and makes this book so visually striking to look at, just wow!I can't and won't spoil much, but for any fan of mind-bending sci-fi and creative storylines in general, this is a treat to read. Now it's been a few months since this came out, and I'm eagerly awaiting the second and presumably final volume, but as of right now, I don't have any idea when that might be.

There's an abundance of rich and interesting familial dynamics, something I found lacking in some of Hickman's other works but impossible to ignore due to the nature of the fantastic four mythos. And they must not be wrong, because this is a well-loved era of The Fantastic Four and readers obviously ate it up. Some truly wonderful sci-fi storytelling that explores really big ideas without losing focus on character. I collect omnibuses and most of the marvel ones are black with minimal or no design, colour or font change, but this is lovely. Hickman is king here, god knows how he managed to fit so much character development in between a family, friends and enemies and still pull off one of the best reads ever! Well, turns out this is one of the most impressive collections of comics I have ever read in any genre.

Grievng, the surviving members of the Fantastic Four dissolve the team – but from its ashes rises the Future Foundation! This is no exaggeration; opening the box, tearing off the plastic and opening this legendary book for the first time was transformative. The webs that are about to be woven will take you to places you've never been…pit our spectacular heroes against classic villains reloaded, as well as brand-new foes…and make you rethink the whole concept of Spider-Man! The previous omnibus collection of Jonathan Hickman’s work ended rather disappointingly with multiple plot threads still in play, and these aren’t addressed immediately, but when he does conclude them it’s a spectacular sequence occupying the middle third of the book. But what will all this change and upheaval mean for Mary Jane, the Black Cat, Aunt May - and all of New York City?Events from Fantastic Four are informed by what occurs in FF and vice-versa, and the paperback collections individually only provide part of the story. Ending the book with the opening mission of the Future Foundation is a shining new beginning, and a taste of what's to come. Hickman takes plots that would happen in the Stan and Jack run and makes them modern, serious and attractive to a contemporary reader. Reed Richards will prove to be his strongest character throughout this first series and moving on to the main one.
