About this deal

A British cavalry regiment throughout World War I, in 1942, the Rangers converted to armor in time to fight at El Alamein and then across North Africa. D-Day and Market Garden are well known, but places like Villers Bocage, Fontenay le Pesnil, Rauray, Gheel, Geilenkirchen, and Cleve; and operations like Epsom, Blackcock, Veritable, Goodwood, Clipper, Dragoon, Pepperpot and Totalize, are much less so. The vast bulk of the British Army of World War II consisted of men like Wharton, who had worked in his father’s printing business before the war.

It was all rather bewildering, but Render recognized he was being given sound advice and determined to follow it religiously. They and their Sherman tanks covered thousands of miles and endured some of the fiercest fighting in Western Europe.

Fighting was still furious and mortar shells crashed around them as Bethell-Fox was told that his friend Keith Douglas had died from a shell burst. But as Holland makes clear in this engrossing book, the Rangers evolved into a highly effective instrument of combat.

He has presented - and written - a large number of television programmes and series for the BBC, Channel 4, National Geographic, and the History and Discovery channels.Inspired by Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers, acclaimed WWII historian James Holland memorably profiles an extraordinary group of citizen soldiers constantly in harm's way. after the allied victory their next major operation was the landings and subsequent campaign in Normandy which takes up at least a third of the book. From the bestselling author of Normandy '44 and Sicily '43, a brilliant new history of the last days of the war'Seldom is war so vividly described. The danger and pressure they faced were immense and the casualties they suffered absolutely horrific. Through compelling eye-witness testimony and James Holland's expert analysis, Brothers In Arms brings to vivid life the final bloody scramble across Europe and gives the most powerful account to date of what it was really like to fight in the dying days of World War Two.
