About this deal

Each of these soft covers is As New; all are first editions and Volume I, Trial by Battle (660 pages).

It was applied in a distinctly partisan way by clerics closely aligned with the English and Burgundians. It was not an ideal situation in which to fight an expensive, if sporadic, war; and within a couple of years of the defeat in France, the factionalism and disquiet that had helped undermine English unity in the closing years of the conflict sparked a new one: the Wars of the Roses. That England could sustain the war, if intermittently, against a population perhaps six or seven times its size for more than a century is remarkable; but the outcome was surely inevitable (or as ‘inevitable’ as history allows).Sumption and Joseph co-wrote a 1979 book, Equality, seeking to show that "no convincing arguments for an equal society have ever been advanced" and that "no such society has ever been successfully created".

Sumption's monumental history will gain well-deserved praise not just as a gripping and eminently readable account of innumerable crimes, follies and misfortunes but as a compelling justification for the enduring value of historical narrative. Her chief achievement was of boosting morale; her legend was built on her successful prophecy that the Dauphin would be crowned King of France at Reims. They were sturdy especially for the intended reader, namely one reading back and forth for the details.

This is not to deny the fact that the Hundred Years War was nominally about the bloodshed between France and England. Likewise, the fascinating French invasion of England in 1405, which was executed in conjunction with Glyndwr's rebellion and actually reached as far as Hereford, merits a mere three pages of cursory discussion despite the great many questions it presents regarding Wales as a front in the Hundred Years War. It gets so little attention, one must assume, because it has been traditionally ignored by historians of the period. In 1426 members of an English parliament were reminded they were not allowed to carry swords or weapons; they therefore hid clubs and rocks in their long hoods and sleeves instead.

After all, The Independent recently described the 2016 Grammy Awards as "a monumental evening" for Justin Bieber, who won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording (for his collaboration "Where Are Ü Now," featuring Skrillex and Diplo, in case you were wondering). He has compared the values of the ECHR and those of the post-war dictatorships of eastern Europe, stating that "they both employ the concept of democracy as a generalised term of approval for a set of political values". Sumption has been highly critical of the British government's lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic on civil libertarian grounds, seeing them as a slippery slope, [53] [37] while also criticising the legal basis for their enactment and the enforceability of COVID-19 control measures. Penn in US (won't be published here until the end of '24, if at all) will properly publish this set on acid-free lig-free paper, sewn gathers and a leather binding. This sudden reversal of fortune was a seminal event in the history of the two principal nation-states of western Europe.

In part this is because the story of England's slow-motion defeat and expulsion from France is so horribly compelling. Extra postage may be required for the shipment of the four volumes depending on destination, but it would be a challenge to find a complete set of this magisterial (an overused word, but here applicable) study in this condition.

He voted to remain in the European Union in the 2016 referendum, describing the decision to leave as, "a serious mistake that will do lasting damage to our economy" [44] and that, "Britain will be dominated by the European Union whether we belong to it or not". On 5 February 1328 the last Capetian king of France was laid to rest in the royal mausoleum of Saint-Denis. He has also questioned whether the virus is serious enough to justify restrictive measures, while also arguing that the effects of lockdowns may be worse than the effects of the actual virus, attracting controversy and debate in British media outlets. Although far from clear it was intended, the disruption of the campaign shrank the fiscal system that paid for the Lancastrian ruled region.

This is relentless, narrative-driven history, written with clarity, passion and, above all, self-confidence. He trusts his own judgement and has certainly read many of the primary sources, though some of the secondary sources he references have been superseded.
