About this deal

Lia Leendertz also provides features on each month’s unique nature, such as beehive behaviour, folklore, seasonal recipes and charts tracking moon phases and tides. It's also good to know what the ocean is doing and when it's safe or desirable to take a trip to the beach, take our shoes and socks off, and experience the sensation of bare feet on Earth's ground for a while. The Almanac: A Seasonal Guide to 2023 by Lia Leendertz gives you the tools and inspiration you need to celebrate, mark and appreciate each month of the year in your own particular way. I loved reading this each month and have already been given a copy of next years book, so I'm looking forward to seeing what this has to offer as my companion through 2024. This is a book with which to explore so much, with its section for each month, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to read and review it.

For younger bookworms – and nostalgic older ones too – there’s the Slightly Foxed Cubs series, in which we’ve reissued a number of classic nature and historical novels. Hotjar sets this cookie to know whether a user is included in the data sampling defined by the site's daily session limit.

I have picked out some favourites, such as the Folk Song for Aries’ Ram “The Derby Ram” given where I live. When I signed up for the 2022 nonfiction reader challenge, the one topic that gave me concern was a reference book. Every month there are records of heavenly activity, locations of planets and the best time to spot such things in the sky.

The Chalke History Festival announces a new name, new look, and tons for history buffs to get their teeth into! Althought It's the shortest day/longest night of the year, it always gives me comfort that the days are getting longer. A total compendium for 2023 providing information about the moon cycle, the sea temperature, zodiac information and some seasonal recipes fitting with the holidays next year. Within the pages allotted to said month was so much of interest and practical use, that I would defy anyone not to find something to inform or delight them.If lighting up the darkness to mark this moment wasn’t in some way necessary to us, we wouldn’t have been doing it for so very, very long. It is a book that would make a wonderful gift for a family member or friend because I know I was delighted to receive my copy. This may include special days for particular faith like Lammas in the Christian faith in August, Bank Holidays, major sport events and other yearly landmarks like the Notting Hill Carnival. In this bleak December, I'm hearted by the fact that we are approaching the Winter solstice tomorrow. Given that 2023 is set to be a stellar year for spotting planets, special attention has been given to the solar system, alongside detail on tides, sunrises and moon phases.

But I've seen enough to know I'll be revisiting it throughout the year, because that is the whole point of the book - it's an almanac. It reminds me of how big the world is, how long its been going and really how minute and shallow our place in it is.With delicate illustrations by Whooli Chen, this beautiful book presents a month-by-month guide to engaging with the seasons in Britain and Ireland. Leendertz’s writing is just lovely (see below) and I’ve appreciated the relevant recipes and folk songs each month. From astronomy to philosophy by way of cookery, music and the environment, Lia Leendertz has all bases covered to keep her readers grounded and in touch with their mental well-being. The beautiful illustrations and cover added to my enjoyment, I think I'd like one of these little almanacs every year.

Its a fabulous mix of plants and the stars, recipes for the month, tide tables etc, a real nature lovers journal. My garden is tiny but I am learning all the time for when I have a larger garden to turn into a sanctuary for all living creatures to enjoy the natural cycles of the seasons. It would make a lovely Christmas present, particularly for anyone interested in astrology and astronomy, and a helpful guide to tasks and events season by season.

An Almanac provides astronomical and meteorological data for any given year including the rising and setting times of the Sun, schedules for the tides and Spring tides, tables of Moon phases and planet positions, a monthly calendar of special days, traditional events and historical knowledge, all of which are a pleasure to explore and enjoy through the seasons. This is a beautiful little hardback with lots of information, for those in Britain and Ireland, about the changing seasons, moon phases, gardening, the night sky and the natural world. This year's focus has been the zodiac but not as a horoscope, but more as the what and why of each month.
