About this deal

The game sees you blasting your way through 60 levels, 200 secondary objectives, all the while taking down the Wild West’s most wanted.

However, I didn’t want both reticules on screen at the same time, unless I was playing with friends. Mad Bullets is one of the first light gun shooters I’ve played on the Nintendo Switch up to this point. This is actually handy if you need to recenter your aim and get a full clip at the same time but the problem is the reverse, every time you need to reload, it re centers your reticle to the centre of the screen. Eventually, I found the best way to play the game was very subtle movements and not to point the joy-con as if it were a TV remote. It’s surprising considering the joy-cons IR sensor can be used to move reticule on the TV screen using its infrared sensors. Remember, even if the Joy-Cons reticule’s start to wander or aren’t centred, all you need to do is press the B button to re-centre it or go to pause menu and re-calibrate it there. I’m in the old school camp and will tell you to ‘reach for the sky’ as in Mad Bullets, someone’s gonna get shot. I must admit, a handful of times I purposely shot the odd bartender who just so happened to step out into the middle of a gunfight. You either duel weld two joy-cons and pretend your rogue cowboy or pass one them controllers to a friend or partner and have someone along for the ride.

It’s in a first-person perspective, similar to games like Lethal Enforcers where it’s like you’re on a conveyor belt, only without the duck and cover mechanic. If playing in singleplayer, you’re only ever going to have one Joy-Con activated unless you decide to dual weld. A red line confirming who the villains are and that you need to shoot them, blue for wanted criminals and green for the people you aren’t supposed to hit. As a dusty gamer with heritage, it was quite refreshing to play Mad Bullets as it’s essentially a light gun game. When you have another player, you can use another joy-con, and both of you can be differentiated on-screen through either a red or blue reticle. My niggle with this was incoming projectiles on the far left or right of the screen as when reloading, the reticle would go back to the centre, and you’d eventually take a bullet to the face. Upon starting your Wild West rampage, you’ll need to calibrate your Joy-Cons by shooting in the centre of the screen and the upper left-hand corner. I couldn’t take screenshots or video capture anymore as when you’re using one Joy-Con for singleplayer, the other one becomes inactive straight away. The positives I can give is the the game looks and sounds great, there is some good variety in the levels, and assuming you are not playing a Switch Lite, you have two joycons which allows you to play two player without the need for extra accessories. Mad Bullets is a typical title I had never heard of, and it was only through my own ventures, that I found this title and have to say that this is one of those gems that you need to look into.

In this case, it shines as you point the joy-con at the screen and hit ZR to fire, R to reload (it’s mirrored if you do a two-player).There isn’t any retro pixel art, 3D models or cel shading, just static images, or cut-outs if you like, of various rogues and innocent bystanders that you aren’t supposed to shoot. If you’re still feeling lonely, you have 3 other friends blasting away with you thanks to game supporting four players! Oh, I forgot to mention that there are 3 locations, 60 levels, 3 minigames, about 200 missions, trendy dubstep music, fully destroyable environmental objects, all mixed in a frantic shooter.
