Trailblazing chemist Dmitri Mendeleev (February 8, 1834–February 2, 1907) came to scientific greatness via an unlikely path, overcoming towering odds to create the periodic table foundational to our understanding of chemistry. Thrilled to see Paul Strathern's 'Mendeleyev’s Dream' featured on Bill Gates Blog and picked as one of his five favourite titles this year! Most of the alchemist and scientist names sounded familiar and I remembered most of their contribution thanks to Asimov’s remarkable style: easy-to-read but powerful and engaging as a good novel. Born in Siberia as one of anywhere between 11 and 17 children — biographical accounts differ, as infant mortality rate in the era was devastatingly high — he was immersed in tragedy from an early age.

As Mendeleyev’s eyes ran once more along the line of ascending atomic weights, he suddenly noticed something that quickened his pulse. A history of chemistry, starting with ancient philosophy, via alchemy, and culminating in Mendeleyev's periodic table. The author unravels the history of chemistry, from the ancient Greek philosophers to the Age of Englightenment and beyond, introducing the colorful cast of characters who fashioned the study of elements into a science. Of course, he had it coming to him because he was just a stupid, benighted alchemist, a charlatan and a fraud. In this elegant and entertaining book, the award-winning novelist and expositor of difficult ideas, Paul Strathern unravels the history of chemistry through the dramatic quest for the elements.

His father was a professor of fine arts, philosophy, and politics, but grew blind and lost his teaching position. There is always a risk that ‘history of science’ books concentrate on the ripping historical yarns at the expense of explaining the science. However, it is unclear why Strathern chooses to linger over some personalities, while he zooms through dozens of others so rapidly that their names and achievements blur together.

The author clearly gets annoyed with the religious meanderings and beliefs of some figures in the book but also conveys how some of these side quests ultimately led to the goal. TLDR: You're safe — there are no nefarious "third parties" lurking on my watch or shedding crumbs of the "cookies" the rest of the internet uses. From that fateful moment, Strathern takes us back 2,500 years to the foundations of Western science. I loved learning about the origins of alchemy and how it transcended into chemistry, and I also really enjoyed reading about the discovery of all the different elements.

Strathern is an entertaining guide, capable of marshalling a colourful cast of thinkers and experimentalists.

Chemistry has been a neglected area of science writing and Mendeleyev, the king of chemistry, is a largely forgotten genius. uses the creation of the periodic table by the great Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleyev, who literally dreamed it up, to bookend a journey through the history of chemistry. Strathern conjures up from the dusty past, and richly fleshes out for us, the long line of extraordinary characters, their lives, influences, and contributions that eventually produced modern chemistry that has so profoundly shaped the modern world.

The book starts and ends with the story of Dmitri Mendeleev's arrangement of the known elements to form the original periodic table. On a wintry February day in 1869 the great Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleyev fell asleep at his desk after a marathon game of patience. It was surprising to discover that Mendeleyev’s biography and the intriguing story of his periodic table discovery were confined to just the last two chapters. His vivid, pacey style is equally present in his first full-length science book, “Mendeleyev’s Dream”, the story of how the Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleyev built upon 2,400 years of chemistry to construct the Periodic Table.
