The Portra 400 is suitable for outdoor shoots, especially when you are trying to capture moving objects. You can also capture nature, travel, wedding, and portrait pictures with the Kodak film. I don’t currently develop any of my own C41 film, so I had to find a lab which would be happy to push my film chemically – not as easy as I thought it would be. A lot of my recent work has been shot in these conditions. For the sake of this article I’m going to consider sunset and sunrise to be the time when direct sunlight is no longer on the foreground or subject, but the clouds in the sky are lit up with color. This light condition can happen as much as 20 minutes before sunrise or after sunset, and the further the sun is below the horizon the more even the light tends to be. The stellar dynamic range of this film makes shooting in these conditions a breeze, but if it’s possible I’m still going to use a soft GND filter to even out the exposure and retain the sunset hues that make the skies so beautiful. When it comes to exposure on Portra (and most negative film in general), once you scan the film you’ll find that your exposure choice doesn’t have so much to do with retaining detail but it does play a huge role in how much color saturation you’ll have. Overexposed negatives have softer colors and underexposed ones will have more saturation and eventually get severe color shifts in very deep shadows. Even using a one or two stop soft GND filter can help you retain some of the richer colors in the sky, but they will always be somewhat subdued on Portra. When you’re shooting your Portra 400, be aware that it’s one of the most forgiving films out there as far as exposure latitude goes. It’s supposed to deliver usable results at two stops over or two stops under, which means shooting anywhere between ISO 100 to 1600 without pulling or pushing. Sigma’s older 85mm f1.4 (non-art) did a great job here when blending the ambient light and the daylight output of the flash being bounced off of a ceiling.

You might think a film designed for shooting portraits and weddings and the like would be a bit sterile for street photography. In my opinion, that would be a wrong assumption. If Portra helps more people to enjoy film and keep buying it, Kodak will make more money and will be able to keep producing all their films for all of us. And that’s kind of where I’m going with this. Now here it is with ceiling lights (typical offices) and a Zeiss 25mm f2 lens. Overexposing here really helped give the film more needed light in a situation like this. For years, professional photographers have preferred KODAK PROFESSIONAL PORTRA Films because of their consistently smooth, natural reproduction of the full range of skin tones.
