About this deal

There are 4 working depths to choose from, but I found all but the shortest one too deep for aerating and definitely more suited for scarifying, but that’s usually the case with these types of aerator. Changing depth is very easy though and there is a handy lever for just that purpose. Cordless aerators: Lightweight, quiet and an environmentally-friendly alternative to petrol types, the downside to buying cordless tools is that they can cost more, and the batteries and chargers are sometimes an additional cost. While they don’t have a restrictive cable and are therefore ideal for accessing all areas of the garden, it’s important to be aware of their charge and run times, as this could limit their effectiveness if you have a larger garden. This is a 2-in-1 aerator and scarifier and comes with both a 48 claw aerator roller, and a 20 blade, stainless steel spike drum for scarifying. Both are ball bearings mounted for smooth operation and longevity.

If your lawn grows on pretty soil high in clay or you live in a rather dry climate, more likely than not, the aeration process for you is a real challenge. If so, we recommend you to consider the Kingfisher RC401 aerator specifically designed for the use in harsh conditions. The Garland aerator fork has a T-shaped handle, which is ergonomically designed to evenly spread the pressure you need to apply to dig the fork into the ground. This saves your shoulders and arms from unnecessary stress. Pros It has 30 metal spikes in total, which are each 45 mm long, and works well to aerate moist ground. Alongside this, the rolling lawn aerator is 30 cm wide, so it’s narrow enough to manoeuvre around smaller areas. As a result, this is one of the best aerators for small gardens. There’s no need to overcomplicate things when it comes to some gardening tools, and the Ames 4-Spike Lawn Aerator is a great example of when simplicity works well. Manual aerators - although these are useful tools, which can do specific jobs (see above), using them requires a lot of effort as it gets tiring, even on a small lawn. But they’re cheap, and a great idea if you’re after a workout.

In terms of storage, the design is very practical. The handles are foldable, as well as height adjustable, and the grass bag can be removed. At 11.5 kg, it’s reasonably lightweight and easy to move around.

Many gardeners prefer to use this "hollow tine" type of aerator if they want a deeper aeration. The shoes above are OK for creating spike holes (thinner holes) in the ground. If however you want larger and deeper holes, then these will work better. You place these on the ground and push down on them with your foot. Speaking of cables, if you choose an electric lawn aerator, look out for a power cable around 10 m long . This way, you should be able to avoid using an extension cable in most medium gardens. To help make your decision little easier, we have chosen a selection of different aerator types that are currently among the most popular in the UK and tested and reviewed them for you. Here’s what I came up with from a combination of years of experience and some personal testing: What does aerating a lawn do? Lawns generally flourish if given the right care and attention at the right time. Use an aerator to do regular maintenance before applying lawn sand or lawn weed and feed in autumn and spring. Electric aerators are better at facilitating large-scale aeration but manual models give you more control over what happens to your lawn. Just make sure that the spikes are sharp enough to pierce the ground and that the handles are comfortable and ergonomic.

For smaller lawns and irregularly-shaped grass spaces, choose a push aerator, handheld model, or aerator shoes. We think the Yard Butler Lawn Coring Aerator is a great manual option for small yards with clay soil. For this kind of work you need something more subtle, and you need to be more in control, and that is why a hand powered lawn aerator like this one is perfect for the job. One major benefit of hand tools like this is they require very little setting up. This product arrives pretty much completely assembled and only requires you to fit the rear metal guard and handle on to it and you are ready to go.

The Vonhaus 2-in-1 aerator and scarifier is similar in many ways to the Einhell model and therefore has a lot of the same pros and cons. The thing about these electric aerators and scarifiers is that they are usually more powerful than people expect and are not refined tools designed for poking small, unnoticeable holes in the grass. The metal spikes are tough and strong, so produce good results, but assembling them on the rolling aerator can take a while. Assembly is probably the biggest downside to this rolling lawn aerator, as the supplied spanner is very low quality and several additional tools will be required.Aerating is only supposed to be done a couple of times a year, in spring or Autumn, so you have to ask yourself if it is worth spending a lot of money on something that you will not be using all that often. These are usually aerator/scarifier combo products and not strictly aerators in the purest sense. They are very powerful and do not require a lot of tiring work from you to operate. The problem with these lawn aerators is that they can tear up your lawn pretty badly. I’d normally recommend taking a look at the VonHaus 2 in 1 or the Einhell RG-SA 1433: Einhell RG-SA 1433 electric scarifier and lawn aerator If you have nice, soft soil that is easily manageable you could easily get away with using a hand powered aerator like a roller type as long as it has some weight behind it. I’d consider the BMC or perhaps the shoes – ABREOME Lawn Aerator Shoes. If you’ve got a small to medium size garden and you’re after an electric machine, the Einhell GC-SA 1231/1 Electric 2-in-1 Scarifier And Lawn Aerator is well worth considering. This model works as both a scarifier and a lawn aerator and has a 31 cm width.
