I first airbrushed the tank solid VMC Khaki, the same color as the fatigues of my guardsmen. I then varnished over it. For Wasp, I simply sprayed her with Brilliant Yellow as I wanted her to be much brighter and her yellow area was much smaller, so I wasn’t interest in creating a transition.

Blue Armor

These armies generally have a lot of metal and warm tones in their armor and machinery, which can be accentuated with Averland Sunset paint. Additionally, Imperial Guard and Adeptus Mechanicus armies have a lot of intricate details and gears, Averland Sunset can be used to bring those out and make them stand out. Rhinox hide has a lovely, reddish tone to it which makes it a good paint to use when painting ruddy, humanoid flesh. Lastly, it’s time to highlight all the metals. This is the longest part of the process, but the one that makes all those details pop and brings the scheme together. I went with Stormhost Silver, as I wanted to maximize the contrast and definition of these models. Normally I’d do some weathering too, but these models are already so busy that adding scratches and such just seems like it would be too much.

I use an airbrush to do the basecoating of my army, for both the speed and a particular finish I get that I find very hard to replicate with a standard brush. Averland Sunset is a popular colour from Citadel Colours, a brand known for its high-quality paints for miniature figurines and tabletop games. This particular shade is a warm, muted yellow with a slightly orange-ish cast, and is often used as a base coat or as a highlight colour. Finally, I do a thin top edge and reflex highlights with Dorn Yellow. If I ever mess up, and I do, a lot, a little Reikland should fix it up.
