About this deal

DS Ashley Knight was an intelligent, lonely, and quite damaged protagonist. She has had a lot of ‘life lessons’ that have caused her to be empathetic to others. I was invested in the plot very early and enjoyed it twisting around - parts of the ending were completely implausible but I still enjoyed reading it. With a well-crafted plot and strong characterization, this book should appeal to many fans of the genre. All in all, “ The Death on Cromer Beach” was a very enjoyable police procedural and I look forward to further books in this series with enthusiasm. Highly recommended! The two dead bodies are a couple of elderly hippy drifters – and those dragged into the case include a local homeless beach drifter, someone recently released from a secure mental institution, with the next dead body discovered (also drowned) a woman – all of whom seem to have been very disturbed and fearful recently. Strange graffiti left around the town refers to seven deaths needed by the sea.

Underneath” by Anne Goodwin – Book Review #NovNov23 #novella @inspiredquill #Underneath#BookReview November 22, 2023 Do not expect erotica and do not expect sailor's profanity - the focus is on the crime, the suspects and the solutions. Unfortunately, the story slows right down with the introduction of DS Ashley Knight and the numerous police officers involved in the case. There are lengthy conversations, as they explain to one one another what the have done/are about to do. Although it’s the first in a series, Ashley is a gal with a past and is soon opening up to a new DC, giving him chapter and verse about her traumatic past. As far as I could see, this lent little to the present story. She also talked to a next door neighbour about the case, revealing details about the case which should have been kept hidden from the public. More conversations in a pub among police officers and more rehashing between Ashley and her DC. This interminable talking cut a large swathe through chapters where I would have preferred more nitty-gritty about the case.Another key character in the book is Cromer itself – the author has gained permission from a number of local businesses to feature them and this gives the book a strong authenticity. I must admit that Cromer is far from my favourite Norfolk beach (too stony, not particularly dog friendly, and too crowded in season) or towns (Holt which is featured and correctly praised in the book is far more to my tastes) but I was delighted in particular to see the excellent Doggie Diner featured (where I was fortunate enough to win a raffle for “what a load of old squit” Waffles the Giant Dog). It soon becomes clear that the murders were carefully planned and the finger of suspicion points to an organised crime gang, but as the evidence mounts, a far more sinister theory emerges.

First in a new police procedural detective series from seemingly a well known writer whose previous DI Barton books were set around his native Peterborough but whose parents have a chalet near Cromer – hence inspiring this series. Police procedures are often treated flippantly in crime novels but here they are taken seriously. It was a delight to read about a briefing meeting with 50 people (not just that 4 or 5 that must fiction murders seem to involve) and headquarters being a decent building with good facilities. The protagonist here is Detective Sergeant Ashley Knight, of a Wymondham based Norfolk Major Investigative Team: when two bodies are discovered on a Norfolk Beach (one decapitated, one buried in the sand and left to drown), the Cromer based Knight is the obvious person to act as a day to day lead on the investigation. This is the first in the new DS Knight series by Ross Greenwood and was published by Bookouture on April 26th, 2023. The first in a new series from bestselling author, Ross Greenwood! A brutal double murder on a Norfolk beach horrifies the town of Cromer. The way the victims died is chilling and so Norfolk’s Major Investigation Team task DS Ashley Knight to manage the case.

About this book

Having more to it than first expected also goes for the case. There are reasons for it to have a connection to an event from years ago. What this connection is and how it is worked into this story is such a good one. There are twists and misdirections and an overall sense of danger and of something lurking and waiting. There’s a killer on the loose who must be caught, or other victims will meet their fate by the sea. Ross Greenwood's "Death on Cromer Beach" is a yet another fun & gripping procedural that takes readers on a journey to the tame but atmospheric and even enigmatic shores of Norfolk, where the tranquil waves hide secrets darker than the depths of the ominous, and seemingly insatiable appetite of the sea. This is a novel that effortlessly weaves a complex web of suspense, inviting readers to dive into a world where the line between the natural beauty of the coast and the secrets it conceals, constantly blurs. The first three books are stand alone, however, some of the characters cross over, and you can see how at times, their lives overlap.
