About this deal

This feature is only supported by some types of files and apps in Huawei tablets that run HarmonyOS 2 or later, and some Huawei laptops that run PC Manager 12.0.2 or later. including 5V / 2A, 9V / 2A, 12V / 2A, 15V / 3A, and 20V / 3.25A. Actual output will vary depending on the device

That’s the highest score we’ve seen from an i5 processor and suggests that the Performance mode in Huawei’s PC Manager (which I used for the test) does what it says on the label. For reference, in Balanced mode, the D15 scored 105. It’s the same story when it comes to the Geekbench 5 test, too: the D15 scored 1,402 single-core and 4,681 in multicore, which is a very commendable performance for an i5-based notebook. I recommend converting them into a single partition using Windows’ Disk Manager. It’s a simple enough job to do: first, delete the D partition and then extend the Windows C partition into the free space. In less good news, I recorded a lowly 17.90fps on the Hitman 2 Mumbai benchmark at 1080p, and that was with supersampling set to 1.00, texture quality at Low and shadow quality at Normal – in other words, the highest benchmark settings the game allowed me to apply. Manager 12.0.2 or later support this function. If you have any questions about this feature, please It also weighs in at 1.62kg for the model with an SSD and hard drive, and 1.53kg for the SSD-only model.

Also, we’re seeing an increasing number of laptops hit battery lives in the double digits – including some that go for over 20 hours. These days, a five and a half hour battery just isn’t that impressive.

The Samsung-made 512GB SSD did well in our speed tests, too, returning sequential read and write speeds of 2,787MB/s and 2,412 MB/s respectively. As with the old model, the new D15’s drive is divided into 119GB “C” and 337GB “D” partitions, which seems rather pointless. Huawei hasn’t taken any massive leaps forward with the new D15, but the small steps it has taken are sufficient to keep it very near the top of our recommended list of affordable laptops for another year, even if the price has gone up and the display hasn’t been given the upgrade it sorely needed. The Intel AX201 Wi-Fi module supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 and there’s an NFC chip to facilitate Huawei’s handy Share phone-linking system, though sadly it only works with Huawei’s own Android/EMUI 11 devices. That’s a shame, because using it to instantly connect your phone and mirror its display on your Windows desktop is really useful. If Huawei opened this up to all Android phones – assuming that is technically possible – it would surely boost its laptop sales. You don’t buy a Core-i5 laptop without discrete graphics for gaming but I still ran our usual Metro: Last Light Redux and DiRT: Showdown tests, and at native screen resolution (again, in Performance mode) they managed 33.5fps and 36fps respectively. This really isn’t all that bad and shows that a little light gaming certainly isn’t out of the question. At a reduced 1,280 x 720 resolution, Doom ran smoothly enough at between 40 and 50fps depending on the level of onscreen mayhem. come with the laptop. Reverse charging only works when the MateBook has more than 10% battery level

Data comes from Huawei labs. Charging HUAWEI MateBook D 15 (only 1% battery left) in sleep mode for 15 minutes using the original charger, and the data comes from PCMark10 Modern Office shows how long the battery last. Actual test results may vary due to differences in user habits and conditions. The twin speakers are not much to write home about, however. Bass and mid tones have very little impact or richness, so consequently things sound a bit tinny. As they fire downwards, if you’re watching something on the sofa or in bed and not at your desk, then everything will sound muffled and muted. While that’s typical of laptops in this price range, it’s no less bemusing. Meanwhile, the screen is too dim and washed out compared to other laptops at this price point, and the battery life of less than four hours for regular use is frankly disappointing. That’s not the end of the world as you’ll still be able to connect this laptop to big monitors for work and presentation purposes. But it means that some content won’t look as smooth as it would if the laptop had an HDMI 2.0 port.

On the plus side, colour accuracy was not totally terrible. Testing yielded an average Delta-E score versus sRGB of 0.74 (where zero is perfect) and a maximum of 2.1. Disk speed tests results were in line with expectations and comparable to other devices in the same price range. The very similar Huawei MateBook D 15 is slightly faster and, again, the M1 Apple MacBook Air (2020) is faster still.

A mid-range laptop with high-end looks

item's display effects conform to a set of low-blue-light standards approved by TÜV Rheinland (color Another bit of bespoke Huawei software is the PC Manager. This can be used to keep all your drivers up to date and to put the D15 into a special Performance mode, which runs the cooling fans faster and the processor harder.

Performance Mode is disabled by default, and requires charging during use. Enabling Turbo Mode provides an instant boost to CPU and GPU performance, which may result in louder fan noise and higher surface temperatures. It is recommended that you use Turbo Mode based on actual needs. The screen is a bit disappointing though, and with a contrast ratio of just 800:1 and a relatively low brightness of 250 nits, the display feels a bit anaemic and washed out. It’s a far cry from some of the bright and vibrant screens we’re used to at this price point – and nowhere near the quality of a MacBook screen. Below the keyboard, the 5.5in touchpad does its job well. It’s nicely sized and easy to use. It supports multitouch (up to four inputs at once) and by default will let you move the cursor in an edge-to-edge sweep with one gesture, meaning most people won’t have to dial up the sensitivity. MacBooks also come with the Touch Bar: a thin OLED touchscreen that runs along the top of the keyboard and shows different buttons depending on the task you’re performing and the app you’re using. The Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) has nothing like this – which is understandable for the price – but it does have a power button with a fingerprint sensor built-in.The Honor MagicBook 15 is more than capable of powering through everyday PC tasks with ease. In my experience, it rarely struggled to cope with anything I threw at it, with the exception of high-end games, which is to be expected as the Honor MagicBook 15 is not a gaming laptop. Only certain Huawei mobile phones and certain Huawei laptops running PC Manager 12.0.2 or later support this function. Performance-wise, however, the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) doesn’t do quite so well. The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U is a decent enough mobile processor for day-to-day tasks, but the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) will struggle to do anything too strenuous. Gaming is certainly out of the question.
