About this deal

https://cdn.opieoils.co.uk/images/variants/icon/bilthamber/bilt-hamber-hydrate-80-500ml-bottle-7.jpg If you are getting underneath a car, make sure you use axle stands or ramps and wear eye protection and a mask. Any areas that are holed will need welding, so don’t waste your time with treatment, but surface rust should be rubbed with a wire brush and then painted with a converter. If you are treating a rust bubble on the bodywork, you will want to remove as much of the rust as possible before treating or it will soon reappear under any filler and top coat. If you need to treat a large amount of rust it might make financial sense to use the BH, and it was still our favourite paint-on fluid, but we’d make sure we applied a decent amount of corrosion protection on top of the treatment too. Hammerite Kurust – Recommended Hydrate-80 provides powerful protection to rusted steel surfaces, its electrochemical function stabilises existing corrosion by converting the iron oxides into a protective metal complex and it also combines with surface moisture and oxygen depriving the corrosion process of the conditions it requires. Paints and coatings applied to a Hydrate-80 treated surface demonstrate amazing improvements in long-term performance. https://cdn.opieoils.co.uk/images/variants/medium/bilthamber/bilt-hamber-hydrate-80-500ml-bottle-3.jpg

Rust prevention

I used Jenolite and Bondaprimer as the first stage and finished with cellulose. Still no sign of rust. Apply sparingly, two coats at 30 minutes interval. The first coat should be worked into pitted areas and then smoothed by brush strokes in one direction. Excess application should be avoided. The second coat should be applied at a 90 degree angle to the first. For best results leave for 24 hours after which finishing coats may be applied. https://cdn.opieoils.co.uk/images/variants/icon/bilthamber/bilt-hamber-hydrate-80-500ml-bottle-1.jpg I was in a rush so I just left the casing in RCP which is permissible as it's a non-porous coating. Remove loose, flaky rust with a wire brush and abrasive paper (or if favoured power tools). The active ingredients of Hydrate-80 must reach the oxidising surface of the steel. Thoroughly degrease the area and wash well with clean water to remove dust and contaminates. Failure to degrease area properly will cause “holidays” or fish-eye like flaws in the barrier.

Traditional paints and coatings applied to corrosion give disappointingly short-lived performance because they simply hide the underlying and continuing corrosion - the failure is first seen by blistering of the coating and the rapid breakthrough of rust. You may see rust on steel brake discs when a car has been sitting for a while but you needn’t be concerned about this. It’ll disappear once the car is used and the rotors have been turned a few times. https://cdn.opieoils.co.uk/images/variants/large/bilthamber/bilt-hamber-hydrate-80-500ml-bottle-4.jpg https://cdn.opieoils.co.uk/images/variants/large/bilthamber/bilt-hamber-hydrate-80-500ml-bottle-6.jpg This confirms the test that practical classics did about 10 years ago (when PC was still an OK magazine) - they tested various "rust converters" anti rust paints, hammerite and zinc primer.

Once dry, the samples were then doused daily in salty water for four weeks to encourage any corrosion to reappear. We then scored them on ease of use, rust-resisting performance and price. Verdict

If you intend to sound proof your car, this rust treatment is also well known for its excellent sound deadening qualities. To return your product, you should mail your product to: Clean and Shiny (UK) Limited , Unit 1 Redan Hill Industrial Estate , Aldershot , GU12 4SJ, United Kingdom The long-term performance of hydrate 80 has been proven to significantly increase coating life in independent tests conducted by the German TÜV organisation under conditions of VDA 621-415 (6 cycles, or 1008 hrs) which included exposure to hot salt-spray, 100% relative humidity and drying atmospheres with each cycle lasting 168 hours.

How To Use

Before treating any corrosion upon your car, it’s advised that you use a wire brush beforehand. This allows you to remove any loose or flaking rust and treat it more effectively using one of our recommendations. If you are new to treating rust on your car, we wrote an in-depth guide on how to remove and treat rust whilst testing out some rust treatment products.

It wasn’t worth the time and effort either. Unlike the other fluids, the Rustins didn’t seem to bond to the metal at all, meaning it just sat on top of the surface. This meant it struggled to protect against our salty spray and actually started flaking off by the end of our test, revealing the bare metal underneath.
