That doesn’t have the surround sound features of the Bar 5.1, but does have an impressive dynamic range. If you have a slim TV and need a means to make the audio bigger and better, the JBL Bar 5.1 is a really great option that will continue to give on many levels. You shouldn’t buy the JBL Bar 5.1 if… If however, you’re the type of person who's going to use your soundbar as the main sound system for your living room, this is not the device for you. If you want the minimalism of a soundbar but the immersion of a surround sound system, plus a Bluetooth speaker, the JBL Bar 5.1 is for you. It’s capable of a big, bassy sound that makes action movies more intense and sports more immersive.

If, however, you’re looking for an alternative to a wired-in surround sound system because you haven’t got the space, or would rather have the flexibility of not always having satellite speakers sitting behind you, the JBL Bar 5.1 is a very tempting option. The JBL Bar 5.1 is great for movies and ideal for music. The subtle bass from the sub adds just enough to feel dramatic, while the punchy mids make for clear voices amid movie sound effects. The JBL Bar 5.1 is clearly designed for one specific audience: movie fans. The bass capabilities and sharp trebles mean you get both satisfying room-rattling sound, and crystal-clear dialogue. The sound quality favors trebles and bass (and we’ll get into this in more detail later) which meant the echoing chamber of Rey’s reveal in Star Wars felt expansive but not quite real which was a shame. Die JBL ersetzt tatsächlich eine Bowens & Wilkens Panorama 2. Diese hatte zwar einen ausgewogenen Klang, aber der "virtuelle" Surround Effekt war für die Katz. Hier ist die JBL weit überlegen. Die Fernbedienung ist gut strukturiert und hat alle notwendigen Funktionen, ohne dabei für den Bediener überladen zu wirken. Einziger Schwachpunkt hier: Sie ist Schwarz, die Beschriftung der Bedienknöpfe Anthrazit. Dies macht es schwer im Schummerlicht des Filmbands Tonanpassungen zu machen. Der richtige Nachteil kommt aber noch, denn man braucht die Fernbedienung. An der Soundbar kann man nur ON/OFF, Lautstärke und Channel bedienen, alles Andere ist auf der Fernbedienung, wie auch die mit wichtigsten Buttons: Bass, Surround und Soundmode.
