Weeks before the pandemic hit, I was plotting a course to visit the UK with London as a central destination. And while I’ve not had the opportunity to revisit these plans, the idea of getting out into the world and traveling internationally again has continued to enter my mind.
Roll and Write games were once all the rage; every time that you looked around, there was a new one to try. After a while, I’ll admit that they all felt a bit same-y, and my enthusiasm for the genre diminished a bit. That being said, I continue to be impressed with the RAW designs from Matthew Dunstan – and we’ve reviewed a number of his recent designs here on the blog: Aquamarine and Voyages – as well as a board game which feels like a RAW, The Guild of Merchant Explorers. Given this recent pedigree, I was actually pretty jazzed to get a chance to try this one out.

If you can’t access that symbol (or you don’t want to), you do not draw a connection. The 6 Street cards also contain symbols which work in the same way. In there somewhere, however, is also a handy switch symbol that lets you split off from any station on your current line to the symbol shown on the next flipped card.
Once you are used to the game, and you start to play with the pencil power cards and the shared goal cards; this also makes you approach each game in a different manner; different enough that I haven’t tired of it yet! The other option for the card is to create an additional branch for your Underground line. When this card is revealed you can choose to draw a new section from any of the stations in your current Underground line (the station does not need to be at either end). To draw the section you must follow all of the other rules regarding construction. Since a Railroad Switch card was drawn, the player can choose to draw a line from the purple Departure station to the circle station that the pencil is pointing to. Score Points For Your Underground Line The current controller for the round shuffles the eleven Station cards together. They will place the cards face down on the table to form the draw pile.

Each section you add must connect two stations. You may not create a section that passes through another station or through another line that you have already drawn (neither your current color or a previous color). The player is unable to draw a line from the square station to the triangle station that the pencil is pointing to. They can’t draw a line to this station because it would pass through another station. They could first draw a line to the circle station, and then draw a line from the circle station to the triangle station. This player would like to draw a line from the Central Station (station with ?) to the square station that the pencil is pointing to. This wouldn’t be allowed though because it would pass through a line that they have already drawn.
