About this deal

Here’s where Samsung wins, even if images from its phones aren’t ‘the best’ when it comes to pixel-peeping: it has the easiest to use and most fun smartphone camera. That still counts for something. Battery Capacity (Typical) : Typical value tested under third-party laboratory condition. Typical value is the estimated average value considering the deviation in battery capacity among the battery samples tested under IEC 61960 standard. Rated (minimum) capacity is 4170mAh for Galaxy Note20 and 4370mAh for Galaxy Note20 Ultra. Actual battery life may vary depending on network environment, usage patterns and other factors.

Battery life from the 4,500mAh cell is also excellent. Streaming video in WQHD mode over Wi-Fi at 75 percent brightness, I got more than 12 hours of screen-on time, which is terrific. Battery life will likely be lower if you're using some of the advanced display features like 120Hz or the S Pen, as the screen's refresh rate adapts to the content being shown on it. The Note 20 Ultra's screen produced 121.5% of the sRGB color gamut in Natural Mode and 201.2% in Vivid mode, compared to 118.6% for the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The Note 20 Ultra beats Apple on accuracy, registering a Delta-E score of 0.24, compared to 0.28 for the iPhone 11 Pro Max (where 0 is perfect). On our web surfing battery test, the Galaxy S20 Ultra lasted 11 hours and 58 minutes in 120Hz mode and 9:13 in 60Hz mode. The Note 20 Ultra lasted a shorter 10 hours and 26 minutes and 7:59, respectively, at 60Hz and 120Hz. One more update to discuss related to the Notes app — it is now built to sync to the cloud and be accessible from any device, whether that’s another Samsung phone or tablet, or your PC. Unfortunately however, the desktop Samsung Notes app is only available for Samsung PCs, which certainly limits its impact. Syncing to Microsoft OneNote is also supported, though only in one direction, from Samsung Notes to OneNote. The decision is an easy one: the 120Hz 1080p setting looks good out of the box, and most people we know who are upgrading from the Note 8 have been impressed. The 6.9-inch screen isn’t big enough to see individual pixels, and we won’t truly need higher resolutions until foldable phones become mainstream.

Why is Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra better than Samsung Galaxy Note 20?

The most exciting and productive feature here involves linking your Note 20 Ultra up to other devices, like your PC, your watch, or your TV. In typical Samsung fashion, there are multiple ways to do everything. A "call and text on other devices" feature will forward your calls to a Samsung tablet or Samsung watch. Link to Windows lets you drag and drop files and answer messages on a Windows PC. Smart View screen casts to your TV. Samsung's DeX mode now also screen casts to your TV, making it a giant presentation monitor.

Battery: Actual battery life varies by network environment, features and apps used, frequency of calls and messages, number of times charged, and many other factors. Images at 20x zoom on the Note 20 Ultra (left) and S20+ (right) are both artifacted, but they're less so on the Note Conclusion: The Most Phone Available It has the same in-display fingerprint sensor as the S20 series. It's fine; I wish it had a larger touch target, but it's par for the course nowadays.

The 108-megapixel sensor still has a very shallow depth of field, and the focus isn't great in the corners if you're taking photos of extremely close-up subjects. The full 108-megapixel mode, meanwhile, is more image than anyone really needs. At a 1:1 pixel view, it's noisy and definitely susceptible to artifacting, unless you're taking pictures in very bright natural light. As it also creates 24MB files, it's more for photography experts to experiment with than anything else. Samsung has already wowed us with a 6.9-inch 120Hz display on the S20 Ultra, but the compromise here is the same as with that phone: you have to choose between 120Hz in 1080p, or dropping to 60Hz to enjoy the QuadHD resolution.

The Your Phone app is rich with features that iPhone and Mac users have been enjoying for years, like the ability to make and receive calls without leaving your desktop. The integration is solid and easy to get up and running once you’ve accepted the flurry of notifications Windows requires to dig its hooks into your Note 20. As dusk set in, I captured this pair of images near an overpass. Samsung’s algorithms are clearly more aggressive in brightening darker hues in scenes, yet the Note 20’s attempt has more obvious contrast as well, particularly within the shadows of the tall grass at the bottom left. Ultimately, I prefer everything about the Galaxy’s attempt, again save for the sky and cloud above, which the iPhone once again captures with more depth, realism and nuance. One UI 2.5 is launching on the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, though it won’t remain exclusive to Samsung’s latest phablets for long. You can expect many of these features to drop on the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series as well, where applicable, once One UI 2.5 rolls out to them. That’s great news for existing Samsung owners, though it hardly makes a good case for upgrading to the Note 20 if you already have one of those recent handsets. Samsung Galaxy Note 20 review: Performance Apple’s Night Mode is typically our favorite of all modern phone makers’ low-light shooting modes, but the Note 20 surprisingly topped the iPhone’s best efforts here. The image from Samsung’s phablet is sharper and less grainy, with more gradation in color, especially looking at the tree to the right and the lawn below. Apple’s software glosses over everything in sepia tones, producing a roundly blurrier and less precise result.
