About this deal

We're used to hearing that we live in an age of unprecedented division, that the great storms that have engulfed British politics over the past ten years have driven us further apart than ever, with no hope of finding common ground. Penny Mordaunt and Chris Lewis disagree. In this lively and insightful book, they argue that although differences of opinion are a natural part of healthy political debate, some of our current division is caused by a need for political reform. Internationally, the British government should be the driving force behind bringing together the D10 group of leading democracies – which consists of the existing G7 members, as well as South Korea, India and Australia – to work together to combat common threats. The authors make an extensive effort to define something that is probably undefinable: the British character. They exhibit all they love about Britain and Britishness, and tell the sceptics, cynics and pessimists to shut up. This, too, will resonate with the average Conservative, most of whom have had enough of being told to be ashamed of their country and particularly of its history. However, the authors tease them for an obsession with nostalgia, proved by their apparent affection for It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. Mordaunt became Minister for Women and Equalities in April 2018, replacing Amber Rudd, who had resigned following the Windrush scandal. [46] In July 2018 she became the first minister to use sign language in the House of Commons, to applause from all sides. [47] In March 2019, she was criticised in a newspaper article by Maya Forstater, who claimed she had not answered to Mumsnet users' satisfaction questions on sex and gender during a webchat held on International Women's Day. Sir Richard Branson calls it “utterly uplifting and inspiring”. Sir Tony Blair thinks similarly – it is “uplifting and highly readable”. It reminds Richard Curtis “of so many things I love about the UK”. Sir Elton John rhapsodises that “I’m deeply proud to be British, not least because of the extraordinarily brave, funny, brilliant, kind and talented people who call these islands home.” And, once inside, you find Bill Gates writing the foreword: “This book shines a spotlight on why Britain is a great nation and points the way ahead for it to become greater still.” a b c d e "Changes to the Register of Members' Interests: Penny Mordaunt". She does not detail this in the book, but the germ of the idea is there, along with more “fiscal devolution” – giving local areas greater tax-raising powers. Following Johnson's announcement in July 2022 that he would resign as Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister, Mordaunt entered the leadership contest to succeed him, but was eliminated in the final round of voting among Conservative MPs and subsequently endorsed Truss. Mordaunt was appointed as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council when Truss became Prime Minister. Following Truss's resignation on 20 October 2022, Mordaunt made a second bid to become Conservative leader and Prime Minister. She pulled out of the election after being unable to gain the necessary endorsement of 100 MPs, allowing Sunak to become Conservative Leader and Prime Minister unopposed. Sunak later retained Mordaunt in his cabinet, continuing as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President, giving her a starring role at the coronation. I've no doubt Penny Mourdant will be on the ballot paper for the next leader of the Conservative Party if she can persuade her colleagues to face the real challenges that face Britain.

Self-belief and self-awareness are needed to achieve any goal. This book provides a plan and, perhaps more importantly, restores pride in our country and each other. When we are united and focused, there is nothing we cannot do.”

Parliamentary career for Penny Mordaunt". UK Parliament. Archived from the original on 13 July 2022 . Retrieved 7 October 2018. The political philosophy book I've been waiting for, written by two authors from both sides of the Brexit debate, which is non-party focussed and is entertaining, humourous, enlightening, thought provoking, this book analyses what is right with Britain and what needs changing. It looks at the quagmire of Whitehall and the civil service, the bloated House of Lords which is the second largest legislature in the world after the Chinese People's Congress. Greater lays out a plan for post-Brexit Britain. Delving into our history, our institutions and our culture, it explains how we arrived at this point and how the British character points the way towards practical national missions.

Kinchen, Rosie (12 January 2014). "Penny Mordaunt: Get fresh and the mermaid of Westminster will break your arm". The Sunday Times. Archived from the original on 2 May 2019 . Retrieved 2 May 2019. Greater lays out a plan for post-Brexit Britain. Delving into our history, our institutions and our culture, it explains how we arrived at this point and how the British character points the way towards practical national missions. It explores Britain's role in the world and how to balance global and local priorities; makes the case for the United Kingdom based on the mutuality that binds us; and calls for modernising reform in politics, government and markets. It describes the role of social media in culture wars and calls for a relentless focus on aspiration and a social enterprise revolution. Above all, it reminds us of the many reasons we have to be optimistic. One policy that Ms Mordaunt has showcased in her leadership campaign is the idea of “social capital pots”, where MPs would have more control over spending in their local areas. Some suggest this is essentially pork barrel politics, but her allies say it is a genuine way to “level up” by ensuring government money is targeted where it is needed, at good causes. On the positive side – having been optimistic about combating climate change, because renewables are plentiful – Mordaunt highlights what she believes will be rare instead: “The new scarcities in an age of values will be consistency, trust, justice, accountability, altruism, reliability, and nobility of cause and purpose.” All these are vital to her vision of Britain, which she feels (like most Conservatives) is a great country whose “brand” is “trusted”. It has an ethos of “service” and if this is to flourish then the people and not the state must take charge.

In this lively and insightful book, they argue that although differences of opinion are a natural part of healthy political debate, some of our current division is caused by a need for political reform. A wave of scandals has corroded public confidence in leadership in all walks of life, fuelled by a hyper-individualistic social media landscape - but by rebuilding public trust we can restore national pride and positive, competent politics.
