Manning "1980s" in Dolan, p. 240: "Neil Gaiman, aided by penciller Mike Dringenberg, introduced the character Death to a fascinated readership... Death was an instant hit and arguably became more popular than the Sandman himself." Dream presents her with a vision of an alternative reality where cats are huge and humans are merely their playthings, tiny servants which groom their bodies and which the cats can kill at their leisure. A man ruined that world by informing the humans that their dreams will shape the world. Enough humans listened to make the vision a reality. Upon waking, the cat undertakes a spiritual quest for justice. She preaches her vision to motley assortments of housecats around the world, hoping that if she can make enough cats believe in and dream of this reality, the world will change to conform to their dreams. Please note: This content is not for kids. It is for mature audiences only. Just like the original graphic novels, this audio adaptation contains explicit language and graphic violence, as well as strong sexual content and themes. Discretion is advised. One of the finest graphic novels ever created is being brought to life by one of the finest producers of audio drama. I'd like to pretend I'm cool enough to get it, but that would mean I'd eventually have to read more of these. And that's not going to happen.

First of all, this volume is essentially half the length of the first two, consisting of four individual numbers instead of the customary eight. It is padded to something close to the normal length by the addition of an original Gaiman script (“Calliope”), which I’m sure will be of great interest to some of you (although I must admit I skipped it myself). Put on your headphones or even better, stream it on your favorite smart speaker in the house and you'll be in for a treat. I listened to The Sandman on my Apple Homepod Stereo setup and the experience was absolutely incredible. I closed my eyes and vividly lived all the events portrayed in this adaptation of the first three Sandman novels.

The third volume of Sandman is several short stand-alone stories. It also includes my my favorite story in the entire series. It's a depiction of the very first performance of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream before an audience of very bizarre creatures. This was probably my least favourite issue in this volume, but I'm blaming this on remembering NOTHING about this play from school. I've no doubt I was missing out on cool little references - perhaps a crash course on the play would have fared me well! It was still pretty funny at times and I will never not be in awe of Gaiman's imagination.
