I must have watched an entire season of Mad Men while I did it. A layer of lining, a layer of shantung, three layers of tulle, a layer of blinged out organza and a final layer of iridescent crinkle organza. Telling a children’s story about a girl’s veiled sexualised fantasies of her mother’s boyfriend is getting away with a fair bit. There’s more to the film of course, and ultimately, Sarah vanquishes Jareth by rejecting his sinister allure and asserting her own power. Her attraction to him though, especially in the novelisation, is undeniable. What makes this uncomfortable isn’t the fact that Labyrinth is in part a story about adolescent female sexual awakening, but that its vision of that awakening was dreamt up by grown men and shows an underage girl drawn to a man of their age. Thought of that way and it’s less sure that Sarah’s is the fantasy we’re watching.

It’s the plastic stuff. The plaque even states it: Iridescent film. That’s the generic term for cellophane, like hook-and-loop tape is for velcro or adhesive bandage for a bandaid. Velcro and Cellophane and Band-Aid are all trademarked terms that have entered common lexicon, and so are usually said in place of the generic names. Roche, Heather (1 February 1999). The character's main outfit, consisting of a large white poet blouse, brocade waistcoat and jeans, [53] was fashioned by Brian Froud and costume designer Ellis Flyte so that it "didn't place her precisely in this world" but would look appropriate in a fairy tale world. However, Sarah's blue jeans were meant to keep her contemporary. [7] Sarah is first introduced in the film wearing a medieval-style gown which is revealed to be a costume when her jeans are shown beneath it. [54] [55]

Jeremy had danced with Sarah, smiling down at her. He kidded her that a flashbulb meant that they’d be all over the gossip columns next morning, and all the way home he drove fast, to shake off the photographers, he claimed, grinning. a b Donaldson, Kayleigh (30 May 2020). An interesting thing I noticed is that on the far sides, additional stripes are added at the very bottom, about 3″ at most, and tapering down. At first I saw it only on the right side, but upon closer looking for quire a while, I was able to make out the extension on the other side. I speculate that the reason for this is that the fabric, which was used lengthwise around the gown instead of in panels, wasn’t wide enough to go from the waist, over the panniers, and to the floor, or wherever they decided to hem it (could have been ankle length, I don’t know since I don’t know Jennifer Connolly’s height). Had those sides been left shorter, it would have been noticed, and shortening the entire gown 3″ would have been noticed. The extensions are sewn on with zigzag stitching. In photo 4, you can see a darker line from the right side that angles down. This is one of the extensions. In my first video, at 44 seconds in, I point it our clearer, and for the one on the right, it’s at 2:19 on my second video. a b c Bitner, Brian (22 January 2016). "Why it Works: Labyrinth".
