About this deal

I think the biggest mistake Simon Scarrow made when writing these books was to make Macro as old as he was at the start, he could’ve easily made him five years younger and it would’ve made no difference to the story or series as a whole. It doesn’t lose the star because of that, but it finally came to a head in this book when Macro departs about a third of the way through to see out his retirement in Britannia, and was obviously gutting as Macro is the best character! Eagles of the Empire is a series of historical military fiction novels written by Simon Scarrow. The series began in July 2000 with the publication of Under the Eagle, and as of March 2022 there have been 21 novels released in the series, with the 22nd novel due in November 2023. [1] Vitellius is of course the villain of the piece. Just as he did in the first book of the series, he betrays his country and his comrades. Lavinia appears in the first two books and is the lover of both Cato and Vitellius. She is a slave-girl who is owned by Flavia, Vespasian's wife. In The Eagle's Conquest she betrays Cato and unwittingly helps Vitellius try to assassinate the Emperor. However, when the plot fails Vitellius kills both her and the assassin to cover himself. n.b. these novellas were available as e-books prior to publication of the full title. Pirata series (with T. J. Andrews) [ edit ]What is to follow is a magnificent encounter in Britannia, with a victorious Emperor Claudius and his famous elephant, and in this environment of war and treason Cato and Macro will have to deal with the dangers and conspiracy, and in the end to extract the rightful justice to the perpetrators. Like most light historical novels, this is the kind of book best read on public transport or other long journeys. I have read many more exciting, envigorating, complex and dark historical novels, and whilst The Eagle's Conquest is not really on par with those kinds of books, if you take it as what it is, it is certainly an enjoyable read. Compare such an invigorating tome with a pair of books where there is precious little depth to any of the characters beyond occasional almost throwaway attempts at adding meat to the character's bones, and you'll hopefully see where I'm disappointed. This, I have to say, is also the first in the series that I can remember ending in a definite cliffhanger ...

The story doesn’t let up all the way through as something is always happening leaving you feeling the urgency of the situation. The Eagle Series written by Simon Scarrow is based on the life of the two main protagonists, Lucius Cornelius Macro and Quintus Licinius Cato, often referred to as Macro and Cato. The two are depicted as Roman soldiers in the series. Macro is described as a veteran, who has the experience of 15 years of service in the Roman Army at the beginning of the series and later gets appointed as the Centurion. Macro has retired to Britain with his wife, Petronella, to enjoy a peaceful life together farming their patch of veteran's land and assisting his mother in the inn she and he together owned in Londinium. Cato was also heading for Britain, having had to leave Rome swiftly and secretly to protect Claudia, Nero's ex lover. Together again, they face more blood and battling than any retired veteran might reasonably expect.Simon Scarrow is a popular novelist from the United Kingdom, who is best known for his novels based on the Historical Fiction genre.
