I'm not usually a fan of memoirs, and I tend to avoid self help books/books on depression because they are either too overwhelming or full of clichés, but this was both very easy to read and insightful. I’ve always found books on depression depressing so was very intrigued to find out about this one. This is Lewis’s personal experience of depression and how she learned to cope with it or should I say listen to it. There were so many wonderful bits in the book I found myself writing them down because here was a book about hope.

If only we manage to hear this voice and take advantage of this costly lesson, depression can thus become a great chance to live better with ourselves, leave forever behind people that do us no good and understand what we really want and can make us more content with what we have.

Een boek over depressie is echt een fijne aanbeveling voor in een nieuwsbrief over schrijven. Nee, maar echt. Wel als de schrijver ervan zelf dichteres is, en het boek vooral heel erg gaat over de samenhang tussen depressie en creativiteit. Firstly, let me be clear: there is heaps, really heaps, about this book which is wonderful - the practical hints, the tone of voice and language, the short digestible paragraphs, and many, many of the insights. So I would not wish to put anyone off reading it at all. I found it sympathetic and uplifting, which, when you're in the throws of depression, are sensations you want to hold onto for as long as you can.
