The Tudor period is a historical period that's held a fascination for many people for a long time, me included. As such there have been many books written on it and films and even a TV show made about it. One of the most fascinating figures from this period is of course Elizabeth I of England. She's had her fair share of biographies, biopics and historical novels written about her, but people still love to discover more about her. But with the amount of works already devoted to Elizabeth and her reign, is it still possible to add something original to what's already out there? It's probably very difficult, but Victoria Lamb definitely gives it a good shot. And I'd dare to say that her look at the Elizabethan court and the love triangle between Elizabeth, Leicester and Lettice Knollys from the perspective of Shakespeare's 'Dark Lady', Lucy Morgan is pretty unique. As a constitutional monarch, the Queen was not involved in the day-to-day business of the Australian Government, but played important ceremonial and symbolic roles, as her son will continue as King. Elizabeth is appointed commandant-in-chief of the women’s services. Now, just the beginning of the war, the exhaustion is already touching her from all the public visits, inspecting preparedness for war. The database compiled by the Guardian reveals the vast swathe of draft UK law that ministers have decided to send to the palace for consideration. I don't even know what to say about the ending. After all that desperate pining and hopelessness, all she had to do was... talk to her husband? Also, what was this whole pregnancy thing? Her willingness to give up one of her twin children was worrying, to say the least. Perhaps the funniest thing is that she had approximately 0 conversations with Cal in reference to being pregnant with his child and running away with him. It was rough, if anything. The Queen's Secret by Victoria Lamb is a look into the inner circle of the Elizabethan Court. Unlike most historical novels however, Lamb has chosen to give us a peak into the Court during a specific event in history. The story centers on a trip Queen Elizabeth and her court took in July of 1575 to Kenilworth, home of Earl Robert Dudley, one of the Queen's long-time favorites. Using the Queen herself and a number of other observers, we get an inside look at the intrigue, romance, and folly of this much-recounted period in history.

I came to this book with high hopes, but I was disappointed in the outcome. There are far more interesting books about the queen whom Hitler said was “the most dangerous woman in Europe”. It read more like a day journal of the Queen’s activities and appointments, than an intimate look into the life of monarch. And what about the Queen’s secret? It does have a bearing on her decision. You’ll have to read the book to find out what it is … I'm not sure how historically accurate the book was as this time period is not my strongest, but i really enjoyed reading about it. I really want to learn more about this time period and read more books set in it. Harper’s enchanting latest (after American Duchess) explores the private life of Queen Elizabeth, formerly Elizabeth Bowes Lyon. Harper traces Elizabeth’s long life through her marriage to King George VI, raising her daughters Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, and living through WWII. Harper’s artful prose brings Elizabeth to glorious life as tensions mount around the animosity between Elizabeth and upstart American socialite Wallis Warfield Simpson, whose intention to marry king Edward VIII led to his abdication (and about whom Elizabeth is said to have uttered “The two people who have caused me the most trouble in my life are Wallis Simpson and Hitler”). While not all of the dishy details are historically established—for instance, the story lines about Elizabeth’s supposedly true parentage, her largely celibate marriage, and certain peccadillos of her brother-in-law, the former king, which call his character into question—Harper’s evocative prose and able plotting make each twist and turn believable. This displays Harper’s mastery at fictional profiles of prominent 20th-century women. (Apr.) And that's another issue, the ending. I really believe the author had no idea how to end it but knew she wanted it to be happy and because of that, we ended up the most convoluted conclusion ever. There was even an eye roll because it was that ridiculous. Really? Cal's content still being a secret? And the king & queen each having their side pieces and then children with their side pieces, but yet they're one big happy family? I call bull shit

” In other instances, a connection to the crown’s financial interests is plain, such as a 1988 bill affecting the duchy of Lancaster, the private estate that gives the Queen a multimillion-pound income. Sunshine burned on her closed lids. Opening them, she danced on, dazzled but alive. Her hands strong, graceful. Her feet pointed thus. Immaculate. The ring of their faces blurred slowly. A tree, shaken: white petals, blossom drifting on the air. Lucy turned, arms wide and spinning, into the last movement." p. 297. Queen Lilac was once an assassin in training instead of doing her royal duties, and that all changed when she had to accept her fate. I have to admire her for wanting to keep up her training and seeing Cal on the side despite being married. Hansen, Lilac's husband, doesn't care for her or want to be married to her. The two have an agreement, but how long will that last? I have to say that I was pretty worried about these two lovebirds and how they might get separated after all. Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers for an ARC of this book. Release date - May 19, 2020

Interesting piece of historical fiction, examining various rumors and theories about the private life of Elizabeth, The Queen Mother…. All I can say is how on earth has this writer sold many millions of books - as of the publication of this edition in '07 was "over 14 million" -? The writing is unbelievably flat and boring. Opening at random:A failed 1999 referendum saw Australians vote to retain the Queen as their head of state. To mark the 25th anniversary of the Australian Republic Movement, then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull declared that Australia is a country of “Elizabethans”. This Elizabethan historical mystery is set in 1585 when Queen Elizabeth I visits Kenilworth, home of her favourite, Robert Dudley. Robert is desperate to marry Elizabeth and hopes that by wooing her at Kenilworth she will finally consent to be his wife. However, Elizabeth is as capricious as she is beautiful and with flirtatious cynicism she is content to leave Robert waiting for her decision. However, waiting in the wings is one of Elizabeth’s beautiful ladies in waiting, Lettice Knollys, wife of the Duke of Essex, who is more than happy to accommodate Robert Dudley’s attentions. Elizabeth is incensed by the growing attraction between Robert and Lettice, and undertakes the services of Lucy Morgan, a young singer in her entourage, to spy on the couple. Combined with the ostentatious portrayal of life in the Elizabethan court, is the story of Lucy Morgan, a young woman who is well used to the world of espionage.Gradually, she uncovers a plot that will have devastating consequences, not just on on Elizabeth’s court, but also on Lucy herself.
