About this deal

At the same time that this happened, there were no new 'disc' chainsets released. They kept with the same chainline, which was 43.5mm for road double. This compared to 48.8mm for MTB double, which is the extra (5mm/2), plus another 2.8mm to cater for big fat tyres. Ultegra & 105 are not lighter, but they are better using ‘SLR EV’ design. The Dura-Ace brakes shave about 30–40 grams off using ‘unobtainium’ parts. Due to the fact that Shimano uses a 160mm rotor, you won't need to apply lots of pressure to the brakes. note that the 'RC 520 Gravel' and the 'RC 520' are the same frame and fork, it's just finishing kit that differs) You do get an option with both 105 and Tiagra rear derailleurs for whether you want a short or long cage version. These will be used with different cassettes.

It's on a Specialized Diverge which has short chainstays so I cannot use the two smallest cogs while in the small chain ring. Not a practrical problem because after the first few low gears it makes sense to be in the large chainring's lowest or second lowest gears of 28.3 gear inches or 32.1 gear inches, respectively. All of the cranksets should shift well, but clearly there are substantial weight savings at 105 level, unless your manufacturer cheaps out with the RS510 instead! Top-level cranksets claim higher stiffness as well. If I was buying a bike with the new Tiagra groupset, such as the Raleigh Criterium Sport, I would be very happy indeed. It does everything you want from a mid-level road bike with only a few very minor quibbles. The biggest decision to make when buying a bike at this price is whether you're really fussed about having the 11-speed of Shimano's more expensive 105, and will come down to your budget. Shimano launched its Tiagra 4700 groupset in 2015. It's a 10-speed groupset that sits above Sora and below 105 in Shimano's range. The biggest cosmetic change from the previous version was the redesigned chainset, it's much better looking than the previous Tiagra, and the brake lever hoods benefit from the same ergonomics, with cables under the bar tape, as first seen on Dura-Ace.Aside from the chainset, the new shifters are the most visible change from the previous Tiagra groupsets. The gear indicator windows have been lost and the size and shape are much like 105.

Welcome to the latest edition of road.cc’s comparison of Shimano's popular Tiagra and 105 groupsets. We've taken an in-depth look at the pros and cons of the two groups and listed the best-priced source of components that we can find. If you're buying a new road bike with the latest Tiagra, there's no doubt about it, you're getting a better bike for your money. Verdict

The Sora & Claris groupsets are not that much different from higher end groupsets, although they use generally lower grade materials. Sora is more-or-less ‘9-speed Claris’, so Claris has definite appeal in that this is ‘enough groupset’, whereas even lower grade groupsets may fall short. The main way Shimano differentiates Claris is with its very heavy outer chainring. Liam says: "Fitting this chainset is just like fitting any Shimano crankset. It's incredibly straightforward and requires only one special tool. You'll need Shimano's tool for the bearing pre-load cap and a 5mm Allen key. The figures for 11spd are 2.7mm x 1.4 = ~3.78mm pitch. The mech ratio is the same 1.4 but the shifter is pulling less cable, so the chain movement is less. Both groupsets use the same material to make the front derailleur. This is aluminum coupled with a chain guide that is stainless steel and then chrome-plated.
