About this deal

Developed by a team of engineers and designers the Loft Leg is strong, lightweight and easy to install. The Loft Leg is manufactured in the UK from recycled polypropylene, to ISO9001 standards and has been mechanically tested by independent experts. Decide whether or not the whole loft needs to be boarded. Many people only board a small area of the loft to keep costs low. Also the amount of boarding should depend on how much you want to store. The Loft Leg is a unique design protected solution to avoid insulation compression when using your loft for storage.

This product raises the loft floor by 175mm on top of ceiling joists, ensuring insulation is not squashed and U values are maintained. Thermal studies have shown that compressing your insulation can reduce its thermal properties by more than 50%. A 175mm Loft Leg fixed on top of a 100mm truss or ceiling joist provides a light weight, cost effective solution. Here's an existing opening to the other side, would i be ok to open this up a bit if i keep it the same width and just cut down? I assume a bolster chisel would do? Or should i be looking for something else?Autumn Statement: Workers to pay less in national insurance – but rate cuts don't offset the freezing of personal tax thresholds Loading limit of existing ceiling structure should be confirmed by a structural engineer. Now screw the board into the legs beneath it using 2 per leg. This board should also have a total of 8 screws fixed into the loft legs.Below is an image of a loft being topped up with more insulation. After we installed space blanket insulation between the rafters, we then placed 200mm space blanket on top. Always make sure you apply more insulation cross ways (90 degree’s to the insulation underneath). This helps to prevent cold spots within your loft. Usually customers go for standard glass fibre insulation. It is the most cost effective solution. Loft Ventilation Choose an area where there are no water pipes, electrical junction boxes, light fittings or anything else you may need access too. If you board over such things it will be difficult to reach in the future. Please note this product is not suitable for habitable rooms as the product is designed to fit on top of ceiling joists in boarded lofts used as storage. Dimensions Make sure your loft space have adequate ventilation. Ideally there should be a cross flow of air in your loft, from one eave to another. The air enters your loft via the soffit boards within the eaves.

So, as part of the EDF free insulation scheme I've just had my loft insulation increased. The original was about 80mm laid between joists and the new stuff is 200mm laid perpendicularly over the joists (see attached photo). I know need to board out the centre section for storage. NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank to close at least 172 branches in 2023/24 – here's the full list, plus alternatives You reduce the amount of moist air within your home. Activities such as showering, cooking a dryer clothes create moisture. Any moist air within your home will raise when heating, thus entering your loft space. Make sure you install extractor fans in your bathroom and kitchen. Ideally you should choose extractors that directly vent to the outside, rather than recirculating ones. We round up the key announcements and what they mean for you. You could do a variation on A by getting a couple of lengths of 100x100mm timber to make the legs and then use 47x100mm or perhaps 38x100mm timber for the joists. 100x100mm timber is common for fence posts. That way you would keep the 200mm for the fibreglass but have more stable joists for laying your floor on. The joists in option B won't be laterally stable till you screw the floor down. Did I mention that you don't need to bother screwing the floor down with the cellotex method other than at the hatch What height above the joists should I aim for given the 200mm of insulation? Should I clear the whole 200mm or would I get away with compressing it by 20-50mm?

Decide where in the loft you want your boarding. Your decision will be influenced by the shape and size of your loft. There may also be obstructions such as vertical beams at awkward angles. If your home is more than 10 years old, its likely you will benefit from extra insulation. The largest majority of heat lost from a building is via the roof. The purpose of loft insulation is to slow down the heat loss process. Loft insulation can also save you a lot of money on heating bills per year. This will help you create great storage space in your attic or loft while allowing the installation of suitable insulation material which will help reduce your heating bills significantly over the lifetime of your home. Loft Legs or loft stilts are loft flooring legs that raise your loft floor boards allowing extra height for your insulation to sit underneath without compressing it. Loft legs therefore maximise your heat saving performance as compressing insulation greatly reduces how effective it is.

The modern trend is to install down lights. However, such lighting does have a negative effect on insulation properties due to the amount of down lights required. Building regulations require a gap between your down lights and insulation. A generous gap ensures the down light will not overheat. Did you know that LED down lights can get very hot too due to there large heat sinks? If you have very old insulation, consider starting from scratch. Once all is removed you can vacuum between the joists. Expect much dust and insulation particles. Also look out for old nests or hives. Once all the insulation is removed you should then be able to see the plasterboard ceilings underneath.
