With a traditional metal chassis, easy top loading bobbin and straight forward operation, you be assured that the AE1700 is designed and built around the values that you know and expect from a Brother sewing machine. To be honest I may be a bit biased when it comes to Brother sewing machines as they are one of my favourite brands. That been said, I don’t think there are many people that will tell you that the stitch quality of the Brother AE2500 isn’t up to standard. The Brother brand have a solid reputation for manufacturing affordable sewing machines that have excellent stitch quality. This has a lot to do with the high-quality motors that they have and the maximum speed of this machine is 1000 stitches per minute. Bobbin System In total there are four presser feet included when you buy the Brother AE1700. These are more geared towards making clothes, which is why I recommend this machine as a good choice for beginners and any budding fashionistas out there. It is also suitable for home furnishings and similar sewing projects and is a quite versatile machine.
As for the more traditional features, the FS40 has a drop-in bobbin and a drop feed mechanism that allows performing open toe or freehand quilting. The free motion quilting is essential for creating complicated patterns when using a sewing machine. And Brother folks know how important it is to upgrade the existing systems with electronics, which they brilliantly do while leaving room for manual sewing capabilities and allowing you to control the process on your own.
The Brother AE1700 comes with a 51 watt motor similar to the Brother AE2500. Compared to the similar priced Singer 1507, which has a 85 watt motor, the difference in power is noticeable. That been said, you will have no problems sewing through multiple layers with this machine. Brother are well-known for their high-quality motors and although they may be less powerful in terms of Wattage than similar priced machines, they are always capable of doing their job. Stitch Quality and Speed The only real caveat about this particular sewing machine is the sheer number of functions that make it look somewhat complicated at first glance. That said, once you read the user manual and get to business with the actual stitching and sewing, it’s actually quite easy to use.
Weighing 6.7 Kg this is by no means considered a lightweight sewing machine. This is however a good indication that it has many parts made of metal rather than plastic, which is always a good sign as metal parts are far more durable. If you are thinking about taking it to sewing classes just be sure that you don’t have to walk too far before you get to your class.
