About this deal

If you have ever cycled a tank before, you are fully aware of just how important it is to test for ammonia.

In addition to using live plants, you can also utilize an ammonia-reducing filter media. These filter media contain natural substances such as zeolite or activated carbon, which can adsorb ammonia molecules. This helps to remove ammonia from the water and keep the tank environment clean and safe for your fish. The customer is required to ensure that the use of any products supplied by VWR does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party and the customer shall indemnify VWR against any claims made against VWR by any third party in relation to any such infringement or alleged infringement. The second filter pad is an hydrophobic material that has been treated in such a manner that only the gaseous ammonia is absorbed by the second filter pad. The second filter pad contains an indicator(s) capable of detecting the gaseous ammonia through a change in the pH of the filter pad The major factor that determines the proportion of ammonia to ammonium in water is pH. The activity of the ammonia is also influenced by ionic strength and temperature of the solution. It is important to remember that while molecular ammonia can be harmful to aquatic organisms, ammonium ion is basically harmless. In the water industry, it is important to know the concentrations of hydrogen bound nitrogen. Therefore, terms ammonia and ammonium are used interchangeably, depicted as NH 3 -N or NH 4 -N correspondingly, and normally expressed in mg/L or PPM of N. Since the test result is a sum of both molecular ammonia (NH 3) and ionic ammonium (NH 4 +), the preferred unit for reporting is as nitrogen (NH 3 -N). Most Hach colorimeters and spectrophotometers have the option to convert the test results between nitrogen, ammonia, and ammonium. This does not change the chemistry of the test; it only changes the units. It should be noted that while there is the same amount of nitrogen in ammonia and ammonium, the stoichiometric ratio of N to NH 3 and NH 4 + are not exactly equal due to different number of the hydrogen atoms. Both the Nessler and salicylate methods are based on a reaction with molecular ammonia in a basic solution. If the original sample contained ammonium ions, the basic reagents would convert it to molecular ammonia and then it will react and contribute to the final test result. However, these simple ammonia tests do not include the ammonia that is in organically bonded amino groups. A true total ammonia test would include chloramines and require heating the sample in an acidic solution to digest the organic ammonia. One commonly suggested household item for testing ammonia levels is household bleach. While bleach can indeed react with ammonia, it is not recommended for this purpose. Bleach contains many additional chemicals and additives that can interfere with the reaction and give inaccurate results. Moreover, bleach is toxic to fish and will harm them if introduced into the tank, even in small amounts. Nothing in this contract shall limit or exclude VWR’s liability for death or personal injury caused by its negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other matter in respect of which it would be unlawful for VWR to exclude or restrict liability. Subject to this, in view of the responsibilities of the customer set out in the above paragraphs: Notice how the readings jump from zero to 20 PPM? That’s a big jump! And, the other scales are similar. Total ammonia is the sum of all ammonia nitrogen present in the form of monochloramine (NH 2Cl), other chloramines, ammonium ion (NH 4 +), and molecular ammonia (NH 3). This parameter may serve as a primary or secondary verification to maintain the chloramination process under control.

I bought these in January 2018, and they are good until the end of 2019. So, basically a two-year shelf life, more than enough time to use the 25 test strips. In some disinfection processes, ammonia is intentionally combined with chlorine to produce monochloramine. Though free chorine is a more powerful disinfectant, monochloramine (bonded ammonia and chlorine) has a stronger residual so it remains in the distribution system longer, thus ensuring disinfection is maintained all the way to the tap. Furthermore, chloramines react less intensely with various impurities in raw water, particularly organic substances, thus minimizing the formation of some carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBP). To optimize the chloramination process, it is important to monitor the formation of the target disinfectant species, while preventing the formation of less desirable dichloramine or trichloramine (nitrogen trichloride). Monochloramine testing is used together with a free ammonia determination to ensure formation of the right disinfectant and reduce raw material costs by preventing the overfeeding of chlorine and/or ammonia. In the guide today, I am going to showcase the API 5-in-1 Test Strips that test for, you guessed it! 5 different parameters… Red or Inflamed Gills: One of the most visible signs of ammonia toxicity is redness or inflammation in the fish's gills. Ammonia damages the delicate gill tissues, causing inflammation and increased blood flow. This can result in reddened gills and increased respiratory effort. If you observe any abnormal redness or swelling in your fish's gills, it may be an indication of high ammonia levels. VWR shall under no circumstances whatsoever be liable to the customer (whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty or otherwise), for any loss of profit, or any indirect or consequential loss arising in connection with the supply of products under this contract; and One of the main sources of ammonia in a fish tank is fish waste and uneaten food. When fish excrete waste, it breaks down into ammonia. If the tank is not properly maintained and the ammonia levels become too high, it can have a detrimental effect on the fish.

The customer is responsible for unloading and transporting large and/or heavy items from delivery vans and for supervising the unloading of all other products delivered. The customer shall cooperate with VWR in all matters relating to the services, provide all such access and information as is necessary and obtain any licences permissions and consents required before commencement of the services. There is one household item that can provide a rough estimate of ammonia levels in a fish tank – common household ammonia. Ammonia, in its pure form, can be diluted and used to gauge ammonia levels. To conduct this test, dilute the ammonia solution in distilled water to achieve a concentration of around 0.5 parts per million (ppm). Carefully add a small amount of this diluted solution to a sample of tank water and observe for any color change. If the water turns green or blue, it indicates the presence of ammonia. However, it is important to note that this method is not as accurate as using a commercial test kit, and the specific concentration of ammonia in the tank cannot be determined. Perform Water Changes: The first step in reducing ammonia levels is to perform a partial water change. Replace about 25% of the tank water with clean, dechlorinated water. This will dilute the ammonia concentration and provide immediate relief to the fish. Repeat the water changes every few days until the ammonia levels stabilize. Using a test strip is by far the easiest way to test the parameters of your aquarium. In fact, the entire process takes less than a minute.
