If you have ever cycled a tank before, you are fully aware of just how important it is to test for ammonia.

In addition to using live plants, you can also utilize an ammonia-reducing filter media. These filter media contain natural substances such as zeolite or activated carbon, which can adsorb ammonia molecules. This helps to remove ammonia from the water and keep the tank environment clean and safe for your fish. The customer is required to ensure that the use of any products supplied by VWR does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party and the customer shall indemnify VWR against any claims made against VWR by any third party in relation to any such infringement or alleged infringement. Since the test result is a sum of both molecular ammonia (NH 3) and ionic ammonium (NH 4 +), the preferred unit for reporting is as nitrogen (NH 3 -N). Most Hach colorimeters and spectrophotometers have the option to convert the test results between nitrogen, ammonia, and ammonium. This does not change the chemistry of the test; it only changes the units. It should be noted that while there is the same amount of nitrogen in ammonia and ammonium, the stoichiometric ratio of N to NH 3 and NH 4 + are not exactly equal due to different number of the hydrogen atoms.Both the Nessler and salicylate methods are based on a reaction with molecular ammonia in a basic solution. If the original sample contained ammonium ions, the basic reagents would convert it to molecular ammonia and then it will react and contribute to the final test result. However, these simple ammonia tests do not include the ammonia that is in organically bonded amino groups. A true total ammonia test would include chloramines and require heating the sample in an acidic solution to digest the organic ammonia. One commonly suggested household item for testing ammonia levels is household bleach. While bleach can indeed react with ammonia, it is not recommended for this purpose. Bleach contains many additional chemicals and additives that can interfere with the reaction and give inaccurate results. Moreover, bleach is toxic to fish and will harm them if introduced into the tank, even in small amounts. Ammonia, in its pure form, can be diluted and used to gauge ammonia levels. To conduct this test, dilute the ammonia solution in distilled water to achieve a concentration of around 0.5 parts per million (ppm). Carefully add a small amount of this diluted solution to a sample of tank water and observe for any color change. If the water turns green or blue, it indicates the presence of ammonia. However, it is important to note that this method is not as accurate as using a commercial test kit, and the specific concentration of ammonia in the tank cannot be determined. Perform Water Changes: The first step in reducing ammonia levels is to perform a partial water change. Replace about 25% of the tank water with clean, dechlorinated water. This will dilute the ammonia concentration and provide immediate relief to the fish. Repeat the water changes every few days until the ammonia levels stabilize. Using a test strip is by far the easiest way to test the parameters of your aquarium. In fact, the entire process takes less than a minute.
