Hattenstone, Simon (24 July 2014). "Bernard Cribbins: 'I made Noël Coward's favourite record' ". The Guardian. Archived from the original on 28 July 2022 . Retrieved 15 July 2019. British Icon of the Week: 'Doctor Who' and 'The Wombles' Favorite Bernard Cribbins | Anglophenia". BBC America. Archived from the original on 26 January 2021 . Retrieved 29 March 2021. The show revolved around the tinker Cuffy, who lived in a scruffy caravan in the fictional picturesque English village of Shillingbury. Beneath his raggy image (flat cap, grubby coat and stubble), deep underneath he had a heart of gold, although he had a tendency to get into mischief (unintentionally). The episodes revolved around some of his hapless misadventures. Cribbins was the star of the ITV series Cribbins (1969–70). [21] His other TV appearances include The Avengers (1968), Fawlty Towers (1975, as the spoon salesman Mr Hutchinson who is mistaken by the character Basil Fawlty for a hotel inspector), [27] Worzel Gummidge (1980), Shillingbury Tales (1980) and its spin-off Cuffy (1983). [2] Besides voicing The Wombles, Cribbins was a regular on BBC children's television in the 1970s as host of performance panel game Star Turn and Star Turn Challenge. [28] The series was filmed in Staithes in Yorkshire, and the scenery of the area is heavily featured in the episodes. Bernard Cribbins, in talking about the location, said “I’ve filmed in a lot of locations throughout my career, but there's something about the sea air, the beauty and the friendliness in Staithes that makes it a special place to be.” [1]

The film adaptation of E Nesbit’s book chronicles the adventures of three children forced to move from London to Yorkshire after their father is imprisoned for being falsely accused of selling state secrets. The intention of the show was to create new stories that had the feeling of classic fairy tales. This brief attracted Russell T Davies to write two stories for the show - his first work with CBeebies.

Bernard Cribbins was remembered as a “creative genius” and a “legend” by those who worked with him following the news of his death.
