About this deal

Set Overwatch: This can be performed in the Movement Phase, and allows the unit performing it to fire Overwatch against enemy units. Honestly my opinion is that this rule set should have been released as a booklet in a White Dwarf and then they could have drip fed the rest of the Faction-specific content over the next few issues. I doubt we’ll see any FAQs or a second print run of the Boarding Action terrain set for this series which is a shame because it looks like a lot of fun to play. So maybe organize a whip round your gaming group and chip in for the terrain and the books? Vashtorr is an independent daemonic entity, the demigod of inventors, engineers, scientists, and artisans. He is the extremity of innovation, of imagination and creation unbound by ethics or morals. Vashtorr gains power whenever a mortal mind is driven by curiosity to understand and exploit the forces of nature. He embodies the drive to achieve technological perfection, and the motivations between his own sphere of influence and the Machine Cult of the Adeptus Mechanicus are disturbingly aligned. Although similar to Be’lakor in that both are demigods, Vashtorr is not a Daemon Prince and is not beholden to any of the four Dark Gods. In contrast to other beings of the Warp, Vashtorr is unflinchingly direct in his communications and pacts. He says what he wants and the terms by which his power is shared are direct and to the point. He is the essence of an engineer.

Rad Leak takes the players into proximity of a leaking reactor. The board is divided into four sectors, labelled A through D, representing different levels of distance away from the reaction (sector A is particularly bad). During the course of the mission the radiation levels increase, ranging from “none” to “extreme” depending on how bad things are. The effect of radiation is to reduce Leadership, Move, and Toughness characteristics depending on the level. Players can score up to 15 points per turn for securing one, two, or more objectives. At the end of the game players score 15 points if they control both markers labelled Critical and 10 points for killing the enemy Warlord. In addition to all this, there is also an Underdog Bonus for the player with fewer points, if the difference between the two armies is more than 30 points. This particular bonus depends on the mission. Try to cover less space with each layer (e.g. start from the middle of the wall with The Fang and only cover the top quarter of the wall with Russ Grey. Thanks to the pillar-base indentation, once you’ve put it together it’s also pretty stable, and combining that with the satisfying weight that the walls have means that, while the layout will obviously be slightly more vulnerable to drifting a bit than with solid plastic, it’s barely a concern. The fact that the kit is fully modular rather than coming with some double-wall pieces or specificly directed columns also makes it super easy to put together as a team – no worry about grabbing specific parts, just add walls and pillars to follow the guidelines. Gaming The third action is Set to Defend , which is performed at the end of the Move Units step of the Movement phase and takes effect at the end of the player’s turn. This is like the fight version of Overwatch, and gives you a +1 to hit in melee during your opponent’s next turn.

Prep and Priming

The Pipeline is another objective securing mission, with five conditions that each provide five points. In addition to the usual control one, control two, and control more goals there is also a pair of objective markers labelled A and B that provide five extra points if both of the paired objectives are controlled. Boarding Actions missions take place within the knotted insides of hulking void ships, where every corridor and room can hide a deadly threat. Build your own void ship to fight through with the Boarding Actions Terrain Set. This highly modular kit contains two double-sided gaming boards, as well as enough frames of terrain to make 68 individual pieces of Gallowdark terrain that you can configure in a wide range of combinations. However, if you’re already playing 40K, and you perhaps also have the correct scenery, the game is really easy to get into. The first step is to paint large areas that I want to be illuminated with Cassandora Yellow shade. I want the least strong yellow wash I can here, and I’m hitting the basic illuminated areas.

First, if a unit’s minimum size is less than five then it can only be included in a Boarding Party if the unit is minimum-sized. This means that if you take something like a unit of Chaos Spawn, it’ll only be a single model. Before we dive in, we’d like to thank Games Workshop for providing us with a preview copy for review purposes. The Lore In Arks of Omen: Abaddon the Warmaster is plotting his next action on The Vengeful Spirit when he is met by the demigod Vashtorr the Arkifane, who promises him an alliance that would serve both of their interests. If their efforts succeed, Abaddon would gain the weapons needed to pursue his goal, while Vashtorr would achieve his goal of ascending to become the Fifth God of Chaos. This plan would unleash a new age of terror and war across the Imperium. This book also contains the rules you’ll need to play Boarding Action games of Warhammer 40,000 – including how to muster your own Boarding Patrol. These small, claustrophobic battles are fought between specialised forces, using Boarding Action terrain across nine unique missions. Arks of Omen: Abaddon (Collectors Edition) I know this design is NOT the most detailed out there. There are a couple of artists that have sucessfully reproduced GW joint system and level of detail... But those designs were not thougt for the needs of filament printers, nor with economy and ease of print in mind. You've got a lot of it to paint and drybrushing and airbrush work is going to be your friend. This could be a fun alternative to the plastic terrain made available by Games Workshop. Because boarding actions terrain is modular, what you’re building from this set is three different types of terrain piece that can then be fitted together to create the maps. You can see finished examples of each of these (some in various configurations) below: For this reason, we generally recommend assembling the terrain in its entirety and putting it in some configuration before you prime it. This will help keep the connections clear of paint and turning assembly into a nightmare.

Underdog Bonus: If one player is the Underdog, that player starts the battle with 1 additional Command point. We have seen the future and it involves you having to buy the other three books which will expand upon Boarding Actions with Faction-specific content and rules, plus any other expansions GW reveals beyond the books we know of. When selecting the targets of a charge, if the charging unit or the potential target are wholly within a Lighting Area that has the lights off:

The Verdict

Also, of course, there is a whole bunch of walls and other scenery to help set the Space Hulk scene. This book provides the basic rules players need to play Boarding Actions games. Unless otherwise specified, all of the Warhammer 40k Core Rules and those found in Codexes and supplementary publications also apply. Here are the major differences: CP and Stratagems The Arks of Omen series introduces rules for Boarding Actions – tightly-fought games of Warhammer 40,000 that recreate oppressive assaults on the claustrophobic confines of voidcraft and space hulks. It's a fresh way to play Warhammer 40,000 using your existing collections.

Being a daemon of calculated malice, his singular goal is to become a being of such power that he can rival that of the Dark Gods themselves. Vashtorr believes that the best way to achieve divinity is to fulfil the same prophecy that Abaddon pursued in the hopes of finding a weapon of incredible power. The pursuit of this prophecy would require the collection of multiple artefacts scattered across the galaxy which could be combined into something that Vashtorr called the Key. To find and return the Key-fragments would require vessels of immense power and capability, and Vashtorr had a plan for that as well: They would harness space hulks and form them into Arks of Omen that would lead Balefleets across the galaxy. The Arks of Omen In the Reinforcements step of a player’s Movement phase (starting from the first battle round onwards), that player can select one of their Strategic Reserves units for each of their Entry Zones that has no models within it and set those units up within those Entry Zones. Operate Hatchway: This can also be performed in the Movement Phase, and allows a unit to try to open a door in the Boarding Actions terrain. If there’s an enemy unit on the other side of the door trying to prevent you from opening it and passing through, you roll off to see if you succeed. For me, the premium price tag is worth it because of the balance the product strikes between speed of assembly and quality on the tabletop – the Bandua printed MDF means that you get the solidity of that material and the visual quality you might expect from a card-based option, without needing to do any painting yourself. This is pretty much laser-focused to my niche as a consumer, as discussed at the start. If you’re in the same boat where it’s the time investment that’s kept you away from playing boarding actions, I think this is the best option on the market, and if I needed to put together a second terrain kit for a friend or a club, this is definitely the one I’d buy. I also really like how clever the design is – it’s very clear that Bandua have some very, very skilled designers on staff, and I’m excitedThis is all a real shame because I honestly believe in this format, which has snappier play and refines actions into something that fixes their major issues. If Games Workshop made a version of this that used a 44×30″ board and came with non-Gallowdark terrain and allowed say, a single vehicle or something similar, I think they’d be able to create an exceptional introductory version of the game in a way that has eluded them before now. I like Boarding Actions, enough that I’m going to play more, but I’m also immediately thinking about how to make it work with Zone Mortalis terrain. I’m also concerned with how long it’ll get support, since this seems exactly like the kind of thing we get right before a new edition to pad out a release schedule. These miniatures are supplied unpainted and require assembly – we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Colour paints. The Boarding Actions or Killteam terrain consists of a LOT of pieces of terrain. If you try to print all that in resin, you are going to feel it in your bags. This terrain set prints in about 70h in my BambuLab P1P, and eats up 1.4kg of PLA (roughly 23€ for me). Space Marines • Necrons • Death Guard • Drukhari • Adeptus Mechanicus • Adepta Sororitas • Orks • Grey Knights • Thousand Sons • Adeptus Custodes • Genestealer Cults • T'au Empire • Aeldari • Tyranids • Imperial Knights • Chaos Knights • Chaos Space Marines • Chaos Daemons • Leagues of Votann • Astra Militarum • World Eaters Of course, to play games in a spaceship, you’ll first need a spaceship – or at least a board’s worth of spaceship terrain, such as the contents of the Boarding Actions Terrain Set. This set contains two sturdy double-sided gaming boards and 68 pieces of massively modular terrain, which can be used for the Boarding Actions missions in the Arks of Omen series.”
