About this deal

United Artists promoted the film with an expensive, extensive advertising campaign, hoping to reproduce the success of The Sound of Music (1965), and it was initially released on a roadshow basis. [4] Reception [ edit ] Original release [ edit ] Even a supernatural vehicle can't bestow immortality on its passengers, and the Potts get into trouble when they stumble upon the hideout of a notorious gang in a cave near the English Channel. Fearsome Joe the Monster and his mobster minions won't let the Potts off easy for interfering with their business, and when Jeremy and Jemima get separated from their parents, it's up to CHITTY-CHITTY-BANG-BANG to keep the exciting adventure from ending tragically. Will the Potts mourn the day they ran afoul of Joe the Monster...or will he regret crossing them? I was pleasantly surprised to find that the first act of the book takes place a stone's throw from where I live. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that the book is nowhere near as twee as the movie. Fuller, Stephanie (22 December 1968). "2 Young Thespians Truly Scrumptious". Chicago Tribune. p.f14. The film did not follow Fleming's novel closely. A novelisation of the film written by John Burke was published at the time of the film's release. It basically followed the film's story, but there were some differences in tone and emphasis; for example, the novelisation mentioned that Caractacus had difficulty coping after the death of his wife and made it clearer that the sequences including Baron Bomburst were fantasy. [40] Comic book adaption [ edit ] As Caractacus' story concludes, an awkward moment ensues when the children ask Caractacus if the story ends with him and Truly getting married. Caractacus does not answer and tries to apologize for his children when he drops Truly off at her manor, saying that the difference in their social status would make a relationship between them ridiculous, offending Truly. Returning glumly to his cottage, Caractacus is surprised to find Lord Scrumptious waiting for him with an offer to buy his candy to sell as a dog treat. Overjoyed that he has finally made a successful invention, he rushes off to tell Truly, inadvertently causing her to crash into the pond once more. He rescues her and they admit their love for each other. Then, as they return home, Chitty flies up into the sky once again, this time without wings. ("Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (Finale)). Retrieved 5 July 2018.As he wrote the novel, Fleming used aspects of his life to flesh out the details, much as he did with many of his Bond stories. [7] Thus, in the novel, one of the children was called Jemima, after the daughter of his previous employer, Hugo Pitman; [5] the advice Pott gave to his children also echoed that of Fleming: "Never say 'no' to adventures. Always say 'yes', otherwise you'll lead a very dull life." [5] In the story, the nasty Baron Bomburst, tyrant of the fictional land of Vulgaria, attempts to steal Chitty. The family escape thanks to Chitty's miraculous transformation into a boat, and Truly goes home to Scrumptious Manor (" Lovely Lonely Man"). The Baron sends two bungling spies to get the car, but they fail repeatedly and eventually decide to kidnap Caractacus instead, but mistake Grandpa for Caractacus. As they fly away in their airship (" Posh!"), Chitty sprouts wings and propellers, and the family pursues the airship all the way to Vulgaria. The Lessons: Money. A little French. A little cooking. Working together as a family (including Chitty) can save the day. The gangsters are planning to rob a famous chocolate shop in Paris using the children as decoys. The Pott children overhear this and manage to warn the shop owner, Monsieur Bon-Bon. Chitty arrives in time to prevent the gangsters from fleeing. The police arrive and the gangsters are taken away. As a reward, Madame Bon-Bon shares the secret recipe of her world-famous fudge with the Potts, and the two families become good friends. Chitty flies the family away to parts unknown, and the book implies that the car has yet more secrets. The 41st Academy Awards | 1969". Oscars.org. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang was serialised in the Daily Express newspaper in five episodes over the course of a week, from Monday 19 October 1964, [23] to Friday 23 October 1964. [24] The Illustrations: Are wonderful and help with the imagination in your own movie form as you go along. Fleming, better known as the creator of James Bond, took his inspiration for the subject from a series of aero-engined racing cars called " Chitty Bang Bang", built by Louis Zborowski in the early 1920s at Higham Park. Fleming had known Higham Park as a guest of its later owner, Walter Whigham, chairman of Robert Fleming & Co. It was the last book he wrote and he did not live to see it published. Best known as the creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming is the surprise author of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", the children's book which later became such a hit at the Box Office.Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)". Rotten Tomatoes. Fandango Media. Archived from the original on 23 May 2019 . Retrieved 6 July 2023. As to the original book of Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car, it starts off introducing us to Caractacus Pott and his family. Caractacus is an inventor who loves to invent but doesn't always find much financial success as a result. His wife and two children are very supportive and they enjoy his quirks and fun almost as much as he does. As in the movie, Caractacus invents the "Toot Sweet" and sells it to a candy shop. He has more success in the book, however, and with the money he earns, the family decides to buy a car. They find Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang in a scrapyard and immediately all four of them fall in love with it. Pott takes it home and spends hours/days in his workshop fixing it up. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. Archived from the original on 19 June 2019 . Retrieved 5 July 2018.The audiobook version is read by David Tennant. Partly because I was in Scotland while I was listening to this, I was a little disappointed that David didn't read this in his own Scottish accent, but rather chose to read it in the English accent he uses for Doctor Who. Still, he reads it brilliantly, and there's actually a short interview with him at the end of the recording about his feeling on the book, which is a nice little extra. He speaks in his own accent in the interview. I loved the narrative style of the book. It was written to be read aloud or at least for the reader to be very cognizant of the narrator's voice. The narrator speaks to the reader, adds additional commentary outside the scope of the main plot and asks questions about the reader's knowledge or thoughts on a particular point. As I read the book aloud to my daughter, I tried to be sure to add the inflections of the narrator as I read to try and draw her in to answering the questions or commenting on the points the narrator made. In reading the book I pictured the narrator as an extension of Ian Fleming and the style existing to put for the feeling of Fleming reading the story to his own children. Filmink stated: "It's a gorgeous looking movie with divine sets, a fabulous cast and cheerful songs; it's also, like so many late '60s musicals, far too long and would have been better at a tight 90 minutes." [35] Film historian Leonard Maltin disagreed, giving the movie just 1.5 out of a possible 4 stars, and describing it as "one big Edsel, with totally forgettable score and some of the shoddiest special effects ever."
