About this deal

Sitting on top of the case, we have crystal glass. Whilst sapphire crystal is nice, it’s definitely not something we expect in a watch in this price range. As a dive watch should it has good water resistance. The minimum water resistance for a watch to be classified as a dive watch and not just a dive-inspired watch is 200m/20ATM, and this is exactly what the NY0085 has. In addition, it is alsoISO6425 certified. Both the hands and the hour markers have a good coating of lume to make reading in dim lit conditions much easier. Most decent diving watches are expected to come with sufficient lume. Speaking of water-resistance, this one has a resistance of 200m/660 feet. This is the minimum required for a dive watch and means that it is suitable for essentially all kinds of water activities including swimming and diving. In addition, the watch is also an ISO certified diver.

Overall, the dial of this watch is clean and well-balanced. It’s basically how a basic dive watch should look and it doesn’t have unnecessary functions or information on it. The Citizen NY0040 has a distinctly sporty look that is familiar to many. That said, you can expect it to carry the same features other sports watches have. It has the traits of a dive watch, so it performs the way other dive watches do. You can trust its depth rating, its bezel functions, and many others. So, you can’t say that it’s just a sports watch by design. It’s a sports watch by principle from the inside out. A strange feature of the Miyota 8200 movement is the fact that the crown sits at this odd 8:00 position, something I’ve already mentioned I’m a fan of. Water Resistance Rating

The NY0040-17LE is an automatic timepiece, and it is powered by the Miyota 8200 automatic self-winding movement. This is an in-house Citizen movement that beats with a frequency of 21600 BPH and has 21 jewels. The movement has proven to be quite reliable, and in fact very reliable if you factor in the price of this watch. Launched in 1997 by Citizen, the Promaster NY0040 (known to many as Citizen NY0040) is one of the most recognisable watches from the brand. Many watch enthusiasts can spot this timepiece instantly, from anywhere. Despite the changes it had undergone, it only proved iconic as ever. To this day, the watch remains in production with various iterations available. To get things started we’re going to be taking a look at the general design of the dial. As is common practice for diving watches, the Citizen NY0040 has a high visibility design making it easy to read at a glance and in dim conditions.

A diver’s 200m water resistance rating makes this watch suitable for scuba diving at depths not suitable for saturation diving. They’ve gone for both a brushed and polished finish which is something I’ve always been quite a fan of. The top of the casing is finished in a brushed style, however, the sides of the casing have a polished shiny finish. I tend to find this sort of design gives a watch a high-quality look. This Citizen diver may not be the most iconic dive watch out there, but it does have quite an impressive history, as well as the specs to make it a thoroughbred diver. I can freely admit that this watch was never on my radar. As you might have read in my previous article on the Seiko 7002, it was the Seiko SKX line that firmly held my novice watch collector’s attention. However, being a student at the time the price was not one that I could even think about paying. I did know one thing — I wanted a proper automatic dive watch. Without further ado, in this article, we are reviewing and looking closer at the Citizen Promaster NY0085. Citizen Promaster NY0085 case

The watch will have a bit of a sporty presence on the wrist, but with a diameter of ”only” 42mm, it is certainly not huge. This means it should work well on most men’s wrists. Citizen Promaster NY0085 dial The hands come in various shapes. The minute hand has an arrow tip. Meanwhile, the hour hand has a square shape to it with a pointy tip. The second hand comes with a sharp tip and a luminous dot at the end.

If you don’t like the rubber strap, you can easily change it to a different strap. This watch looks good on many different straps. Specifications Movement: Citizen in-house Miyota Calibre 8200, self-winding movement with a manual-winding function Moving on to the dial, it’s evident that Citizen has paid attention to legibility, which is key in a dive watch. Again, the dial color depends on which version you opt for. It has large applied hour markers with polished metal frames around it and luminescent material applied to them. It has a pointy arrow-tipped minutes hand and a square-shaped hour hand with a pointy tip.

All in all, the Citizen Promaster NY0040-17LE is a dive watch that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. When looking for affordable automatic dive watches, Seiko is often a lot of people’s first choice, but this watch is well-built, solid, and offers exceptional value for money. There’s no denying it’s a well made Japanese watch that’s ideal for diving with the ISO certification and high visibility display. Plus it’s what I’d class as an affordable watch which is something I love featuring on this watch blog. The hour markers have polished metal frames around them and are applied to the dial. They, in turn, have luminescent material applied to them.
