About this deal

I hated their mother, she was terrible and she got on my nerves, especially at the end. I wanted to scream at Maya to do something about her, and when I talk to a character from a book, well… I’m totally into it. The day Maya falls at school, at home later, Lochan watches her sleep—watching over her because she's hurt. In a way I wish I had never read this book, because it is so sad, but every time I think that, I regret it instantly. It is the type of book that opens your mind to the world around you, that shows you how unfair life is, and that no matter how hard it may be, someone has always got it harder.

The story of the Whitelys: a Big, Screwed-Up Family, with a Disappeared Dad, a neglectful, alcoholic mum, and five children. With their parents almost completely out of the picture, the eldest two children— Lochan (17) and Maya (16)—have been Promoted to Parents for their three younger siblings: However, it wasn't for long, because I found this book to be too wordy, I felt like certain parts were put in the story, just to make book longer, because I couldn't see any point of them. Often I felt myself get so angry at Mathéo and Lola that I just wanted to stop reading entirely. By the time I got to the 70%, I already wanted for story to end, so I can finally found out what happened in that weekend. In the end I was so bored and tired that I didn't even feel sad when Lola committed suicide.

So one more time, if you’re not for the dark and depraved type of story with a toxic high school relationship that was built on a foundation of abuse, then you might not want to read this. But if you’re one of the few who’s curious, I’d say try it out and worst comes to worst, you dnf it. WARNING! To review this book the way I want to, I need to include some slight spoilers. Please read no further if you're planning on reading this book and don't want it spoilt for you. My God, What Have I Done?: Both Lochan and Maya have this reaction at various stages when they think about the harm they could do to their family and each other. Kit has a major one after he, in a moment of misdirected anger, tells their mother about the relationship and she calls the police.

There were some things about this book that just didn't sit right with me when it came to realism; I sometimes I had trouble believing Maya and Lochan as characters, they were just a bit too unrealistic sometimes. There were a lot of exclamation marks in this book, exclaiming things that didn't need to be and no-one talks like that. I "hear" dialogue when I read, so "hearing" them talk be so excited or tense or some other emotional extreme all the time, including when they were having just a normal conversation rather than an intense one about them, was so jarring. There were also things they said that teenagers just don't say. Maya, who is 16, would call Lochan "my love", and they would both refer to the younger children as "the little ones", all the time. An adult might say that, but definitely not a teenager - and even an adult wouldn't say it so often. Lochan nods slowly [...]. "Unless there was some really strong evidence to the contrary - an admission of guilt on your part, witnesses or something - then, yes."And I'm going to have to leave the review it that. I've written and rewritten 3 other paragraphs a bunch of times but I can't find the right words (or explain the things I want to without giving too much away). Maya: Yeah, yeah. So he’s hot. But he knows it. I might fancy him just like everyone else, but I never said I wanted to go out with the guy. Hope Spot: In the last part of the book, the family are happier and more settled than they've ever been, Kit's finally behaving, Lochan's anxiety is improving, and Lochan and Maya seem to have found peace together. Then their mother discovers their relationship and everything falls apart. Just wow, wow, wow! I want too keep writing about how it has affected my views on how hard life is and how fantastic this book is, but all I can say is read it! I don't think you will regret it. It was a really sweet epilogue. Read it after you finish Forbidden, It contains spoilers. Dear author…
