Frontline Spray is dosed based on the weight of the cat it’s being applied on. The label on the spray bottle does include a weight-based dosing chart to refer to for both cats and dogs. You’ll find these plus some other reasons to consider if you feel a product isn’t working. When you receive the medication, it’s important to read and understand the dosage instructions. The strength and dose of the medication may depend on the size of your cat or dog. If the product really doesn’t seem to be working, there are other things to consider like application errors, bathing within 24 hours of application, etc.

It’s important to note here that the spray cannot be used in a single application spot at the base of the head the way the spot-on products can be used. Spot-on products have a carrier agent that allow the drug to spread throughout the oils of the coat over about 18 to 24 hours. The spray must be used more liberally across the entire coat and body to be effective. Do not get this product in your pet’s eyes or mouth. Apply spray mist until animal’s hair is damp to thoroughly wet. Approximately 1 to 2 pumps per pound of the animal’s body weight will be required. Pets with long or dense coats will require the higher rate.

Frontline Flea Spray dries within 5-10 minutes. It is a fast-drying product that can be applied to wet or dry fur. If you are fighting a flea infestation in the home, a Frontline spot-on product can break the flea life cycle. If using only the spray, eggs and larvae will still develop, making more fleas constantly appear. It’s true the new adults will die, because the spray, once applied, does last for 30 days, but it can be continually irritating for the cat to have them constantly hatching. This will also mean that eggs and larvae are more likely to end up in the home environment as well. When used properly, side effects to Frontline products are uncommon. Frontline Plus for cats is only labeled for cats older than 8 weeks of age. Topical products like Frontline should never be ingested. Frontline Spray contains only fipronil, which means that it doesn’t provide as much prevention coverage as the newer spot-on product innovations Frontline Plus and Frontline GOLD.

If for some reason you are unsure if the product was administered correctly or whether all of it was applied, it is usually safest to not apply an additional dose. While Frontline products should never be ingested, fipronil generally appears to have a low potential for toxicity both topically and even if accidentally ingested. The dose of the spray is also approximated based on body weight and does not have a well-regulated, metered dose like the ampules do. The second disadvantage is in the application process. Keeping a kitty still for a single spot-on application is feasible in most cases, though some kitty parents even have trouble with this. Generally, applying a spray liberally to a cat’s body and needing to work it into the fur coat is intensive and many grown cats may not sit still well for it.

The risk of causing side effects may increase in the event of an overdose. In case of overdose, apply appropriate symptomatic treatment.

When there’s an active flea infestation and Frontline is applied to stop it, it can take 24 hours initially for the product to disseminate through the skin. Application is also generally messier, requiring gloves and possibly keeping a kitty that has had the spray recently applied in a confined area like a bathroom for at least 24 hours until the spray fully dries to prevent it from ending up on upholstery and furniture. The manufacturer recommends applying the spray from a distance of 10 to 20 centimeters (about 4 to 8 inches). The spray should be applied against the lay of the coat so that the spray can be worked down toward the skin more effectively. This does mean that eggs and larvae may still develop into adult fleas, so it may be possible to see new adults emerge after a couple of weeks of initially killing the original adult flea infestation.
