About this deal

It was in the heart of the 16th century family home Maison Villevert, where G’Vine was first dreamed up and is now produced. Unconventional by its very nature, it is a gin made of grapes instead of more common lower quality grains. It is from the imagination of master distiller Jean-Sébastien Robicquet, that this gin was brought to life by the untapped potential he saw in the grapes of his home in the Cognac region. Maison Villevert chose a bold green color for G’Vine Floraison’s bottle. It represents the Cognac land from which the gin is born, and alludes to the audacity and creativity of our master distiller, Jean-Sébastien Robicquet. G’Vine: vine blossoms and grapes Robicquet said: “Fred embodies G’Vine perfectly as a symbol of French charm and elegance. His passion, knowledge and proven expertise make him extremely relevant when talking about wine, spirits and gastronomy. Fred has that French flair and je ne sais quoi that fits the DNA and raison d’être of G’Vine. Furthermore our friendship and shared origin of France make him a natural addition to the Maison Villevert family.”

The partnership forms part of the wider ‘Gin Your Way’ UK marketing campaign launching in October to inspire consumers to explore new ways to enjoy gin. Fred will use his expertise to create inspiring drinking experiences with G’Vine complemented by a series of ‘Gin Your Way’ consumer events taking place in December. In 2005 I decided to harvest in June and cut the vine flowers on a Friday. We put everything we had harvested in a drum over the weekend to try to preserve it. On the Monday they had all wilted but the air was filled with the floral, fruity flavours that we decided to put into the gin. Floraison has 3 parts – grape neutral spirit, botanical distillates, and vine flower distillate. These are blended and then distilled again together. Amazingly, when I first wrote about this gin ten years ago, I thought it was “as contemporary as it gets.” And oddly enough, after ten years of writing about contemporary style gins. It still is. But this ambitious, floral-forward take on gin has aged exceptionally well*. It’s just as “out there” as when I first tried it, but it’s just as good— perhaps better. In a world where so many are trying to push the boundaries of gin, EuroWineGate did the same thing— and it still may be one of, if not the, best. After 11 years in at LVMH and William Pitters, Jean Sébastien Robicquet pooled his technical competencies and his business acumen to form in EWG in 2001, now named Maison Villevert. Based in Villevert, a 16th century family manor in Cognac, Robicquet now freely and energetically expresses his vision of the spirits universe by creating contemporary and ultra-premium products, with one motto: “Grapes ennobling the spirits category”. At the time, the Cognac industry was in crisis. Vineyards had to reorganise to produce different types of wine as people weren't buying Cognac as much as they were. 50% of our capacity was having to be kept or aged and treasured. So we had the raw material of grapes that make the spirit rounded, velvety and smooth.

The folks behind G’vine are no stranger to the history of gin and grape-spirit-based-gins. In fact they are behind the 2014 re-creation of a 1495 gin recipe discovered in a Dutch text ( yes, the GIN is IN has reviewed it). Each bottle of G’Vine is numbered, not only to improve accountability, but also to fight against counterfeiting. With minimal inscriptions, the clarity and purity of the glass embodies that of the product. I was born in Bordeaux and was an Oenologist (Oenology is the science and study of wine and winemaking). I wanted to improve my knowledge of sales and marketing. You can produce but you also need to sell. I started working with LVMH in 1989. I worked as a product manager, in charge of wine of course.

Though my favorite drink with Floraison is the Gin and Tonic. I don’t think any contemporary style gin better complements the gentle bitterness of tonic than this one. To me, a G’vine Floraison and Tonic is quintessentially spring. I love it. Overall

You need 3 pillars. A signature, the quality of the product, and interaction with customers. Passion, technique and marketing. I always try to spread the word, the knowledge and the passion. I'm an evangelist of grapes! If you want to be historically factual— and you know that I love getting into historical details— the earliest juniper flavored spirits were distilled from a base of wine. In other words, grapes. Just like G’vine Floraison. This is the first time a UK ambassador has been selected by the premium French gin made with grapes and reflects distiller Maison Villevert’s continued drive for growth in the local market following ongoing success since launching in 2006. The 'G'Vine' name comes from ‘Vigne’ and we inflated the ‘Gin’ for ‘G’Vine’. Floraison is the flowering season of vines, and after that you have Nouaison when the vines are starting to produce grapes.

The outstanding qualities of this gin come from using grapes and vine flowers in its creation, which is unique for a gin. The grapes lend round, smooth qualities, while the vine flowers are delicate and fresh, a bouquet of botanicals complements their flavours. This all makes for a superbly fresh, floral and elegant gin. Maison Villevert-owned G’Vine gin has named French TV personality Fred Sirieix as its first UK ambassador.

In 2006, I said we can make a gin but we will do it in a different way, and we made G’Vine Floraison. Behind each of our products was aim to bring the attitude of France. The soul of the neutral spirit is imprinted in the gin. Do you prefer to chew grain or grapes!? Our first achievement was to take a grape spirit as a white painting that we could add our imprint to. Firstly, it’s distilled from the Ugni Blanc or Trebbiano grape. This grape is one of the most widely planted in the world. It has a very high yield, which makes it great for table white wines. It’s even used in the production of balsamic vinegar. But those high yields make it especially attractive to those who distill. So Cognac and Armagnac love the Ugni Blanc and use it quite widely.I am very proud to be the first ambassador for G’Vine, an exceptional French gin, and I look forward to it being welcomed into homes here in the UK, like I have been. We also share the same roots from the inspiring southwest region of France,” says Sirieix. G’Vine is different to traditional gins because it is made with grapes not grain and this makes it very smooth, also like me. G’Vine is me in a bottle!” G’Vine has received 43 international awards since its creation including 12 gold and double gold medals and became the third leading premium gin in the world just ten years after launch (source: IWSR), furthermore the use of grapes rather than grain has secured its position a trailblazer in the premium gin boom in the 21st century.
