About this deal

People are dying to get in. The exhibits will kill to get out . . . the most haunted theme park in the world--GHOSTLAND! . . . "

Ghostland is a delicious, creepy, gothic gazetteer to a British landscape filled with folkloric, literary and filmic spirits, avian auguries, and natural history and a deeply touching personal grief that speaks to the hauntedness of childhood memory and teenage dreams. Obsessive, possessive, nostalgic, an act of vivid retrieval - this is a uniquely strange and wonderful work of literature' Philip Hoare The glass shattered, causing [her] head and upper body to fall through the door and shards of glass. As a result of the incident, [she] badly cut the left side of her face. [10]

This Omnibus Edition contains the entire Ghostland Trilogy, including the "prequel," new chapters, an all-new "post-credits scene," bonus Ghost Hunter's Guide entries and interior artwork. I think this book was mismarketed. It was way more academic than I was expecting and didn't supply many ghost stories that it didn't immediately disprove. In the middle section, the themes seems to get away from the author, as though he was trying to talk about too many things at once. There are many references to literature in here, which is great, but he spoiled twists to a few of those works, which is not so great. Overall I liked this and am glad I own it. I'd definitely be interested in reading more from this author in the future! Psychogeography at is finest, Ghostland is a personal meditation on the primal power of the British landscape to shape literature, film and television that tunes into the core collective experience of the Haunted Generation' Cathi Unsworth, author of Weirdo A marvellous blend of travel writing, history and grief memoir, Ghostland provides not only a seance with the author's lost family, but also a premonition of his dazzling literary future' Paul Willetts, author of Members Only, filmed as The Look of Love His is a wonderfully evocative book, creating a sense of place and invoking the power of literature and nature.' The Guardian

But as always with Mr. Ralston’s work, the real joy is in the characters. A dad who’s the king of corny dad jokes, a Scottish ghost who finds great joy in his disembodied (heh. Again, read the book, you’ll see why that’s clever) state, a gambling addict in love with a psychic, and so, so many more. GHOSTLAND: IN SEARCH OF A HAUNTED COUNTRY (2019; 468 pp. with a Selected List of Sources and Index) by Edward Parnell has to be one of the most unusual and intriguing pieces of non-fiction related to weird fiction recently published. Portions of the book read like a travelogue. At times it reads like the personal memoir of a bibliophile with countless references and analysis of books, stories, and writers of the supernatural from the United Kingdom with keen observations on how environment can inflame imaginations and inspire creativity. It is also the journal of a life-long birdwatcher. Finally, GHOSTLAND is a very personal memoir about dealing with and learning to cope with almost impossible painful, personal grief. Although the entire book takes place in the past, the story is told in a fairly linear fashion, but it also contains an almost stream of consciousness style of writing with Parnell moving from topic to topic covering the various aspects of his book. As such, readers may need to read a few chapters to adjust to the writer’s style and the book’s content. Once they do, most are sure to be mesmerized. At this, the prince returned to the next land, and went to the same shore, where once again he came upon the man in full evening dress. a b c Strauss, Frédéric (5 February 2018). "Festival de Gérardmer 2018: l'année des poupées sanglantes (et françaises!)". Télérama (in French) . Retrieved 24 February 2018. I tried but I really couldn't stand this one. For me personally, it was the tone that the author took.

I’ve read a few of Mr. Ralston’s works, and well… he hasn’t let me down yet. When he first started talking on social media about the trilogy, my first instinct was to smile politely, say “Wow, that sounds fun!” and then quietly not read it. But eventually, I looked closer, and realized that in fact, Ghostland is not a good story and its sequels, but one single story. One incredible, immense, heartbreaking, breathtaking story. a b c d e "Ghostland" (in French). Festival international du film fantastique de Gérardmer. Archived from the original on 5 February 2018 . Retrieved 15 March 2018. The author keeps a pretty even keel in his tone and treatment of the ghost stories and locations. The only time he seems to get a bit irritated is when writing about ghost hunters for profit or fame and the "dark tourism" industry, which he feels is disingenuous and potentially harmful to the scientific field of the paranormal and to the landmarks themselves, which can become vandalized due to thrill seekers. My father the king has told me who you are,' said the young prince indignantly. 'You deceived me last time, but not again. Now I know that those are not real islands and real princesses, because you are a magician.' Ghostland is a not-spooky, but thoroughly entertaining, examination of ghost stories and haunted locales throughout America with the express intent of debunking the paranormal and better understanding how ghost stories reflect on our past and present.
