If more than one player survives 8 rounds, these players total up their points from the adventure cards they’ve collected. They can also score bonus points. There are 4 bonus categories and the player with the most in each category will score 3 bonus points in that category. For example, the surviving player with the most ammo will get 3 points. If there is a tie in a category, no one gets the bonus points. The game is played over eight rounds. To win, you need to have at least one survivor make it all the way to the West Coast by lasting all eight rounds; among those players that do, the player with the most points wins. The game gets progressively more challenging each round: the first two rounds are with the relatively easy Level I card, then there are three rounds with the moderately-challenging Level II cards, and the final three rounds are with the difficult Level III cards. While the dice rolls are entirely random, the strategy lies in determining when to stop rolling and enjoy the brains you have. Dice come in three different levels of danger; holding onto a red die is practically begging for a shotgun blast to the face. If you accumulate three shotgun blasts before stopping, you have been sufficiently triple-tapped into oblivion. Don't get too greedy, we all want some piece of mind. If they pass on a turn, it doesn’t stop them from choosing to increase their bid as it comes around to them again. There are hordes of zombie games available to gamers, so will this latest foray into the post-apocalyptic world rival the best zombie-themed games? Or will Hit Z Road end up in the trash with the other contenders to the undead crown?

So, when I was made aware of Hit Z Road at Gen Con, I initially laughed it off as yet ANOTHER zombie game. But I was told by my Euro obsessed friend, Walt, that it was really fun. He also made me aware that it was designed by none other than Martin Wallace. Yes. THE Martin Wallace, known for Age of Steam, Brass and Runebound.

In addition, resources become less plentiful in later rounds of the game when the zombie count increases. So getting a lot of resources early can really pay off. One thing I really love is you can collect items and “friends” along your way and they may give you a positive benefit or negative effect depending on the route you take. For instance, there is a kid who can join your gang who may, down the line, blow a load of zombies up for you with a home-made bomb, or conversely he may steal your resources! Hit Z Road is a 1-4 player game of resource and risk management set in a zombie-filled America. Each player is trying to guide their group of survivors to the relative safety of California. Along the way you’ll accumulate Victory Points by killing zombies, collecting valuable resources, and ensuring members of your party are still alive to enjoy that zombie-free West Coast weather. There’s also a strong possibility that one or more will succumb to the walking dead so whoever is still alive at the end and has the most VPs is the winner. The Walking Dead: All Out War A miniatures war game set in Robert Kirkman's comic-book universe Drawing from the Walking Dead comics rather than the TV show, All Out War captures the series' struggle for survival. The wood components: The wooden tokens are standard fare; however, my kids particularly enjoyed how the zomeeples had little outstretched arms. The wood dice are also nice and the symbols are easy to understand, although I am not sure how Martin, the zombie apocalypse survivor, would have managed to craft these dice during his travels (these are really the only components that did not meet the theme I discussed above). If you think taking a road trip during the zombie apocalypse, then Hit Z Road might be just the game for you. Watch out for zombies! That being said, I know the people I’ve played it with have loved it more than I. And it seems they also tend to like the zombie theme more than I do as well.Skull with lightning: 1 of the player’s survivors has been bitten and will die unless the player spends 1 adrenaline token to save the survivor. If they choose not to (or can’t) spend an adrenaline token, they must lose one of their survivors. Zombie Kidz Evolution A co-op legacy game that's fun for the whole family A family-friendly affair compared to the blood and guts of other zombie games, Zombie Kidz Evolution is also a great first legacy experience. The artwork in this game is superb and the three different stages of adventure cards show very differing scenery (Chicago city, middle America, West Coast) that really makes you feel like you’re progressing across America and each stage presents its own thematic and increasingly difficult challenges.
