In Crowley's particular case, the "strange drugs" would most likely be a reference to peyote, a cactus with which he claimed to have conducted "hundreds of experiments" (Equinox 3.1) that unfortunately were never published because their records were destroyed. In particular, he began experimenting with this substance in 1907 (the year in which he obtained his Knowledge and Conversation) and by 1908 he had published "The Drug" as a story with autobiographical references. Other theories also point to lotus and wine, if such a mixture can provoke a profound enough effect on the magician's psyche. As such, before the Eastern Orthodox liturgy of the Communion of the Faithful, a prayer asks "For an angel of peace, a faithful guide, a guardian of our souls and bodies, let us entreat the Lord. Amen." [28] Lutheran Church [ edit ] Also known as Arda Fravaš ('Holy Guardian Angels'). Each person is accompanied by a guardian angel, [1] which acts as a guide throughout life. They originally patrolled the boundaries of the ramparts of heaven, [2] but volunteer to descend to earth to stand by individuals to the end of their days. Crowley became aware of the book entitled The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage from George Cecil Jones, a member of the Golden Dawn. The book describes the full procedure for “Knowledge and Conversation” and gave him the term "Holy Guardian Angel." Crowley sums up the book in The Equinox of the Gods: The aspirant must have a house secure from observation and interference. In this house there must be an oratory with a window to the East, and a door to the North opening upon a terrace, at the end of which must be a lodge. He must have a Robe, Crown, Wand, Altar, Incense, Anointing Oil, and a Silver Lamen. The terrace and lodge must be strewn with fine sand. He withdraws himself gradually from human intercourse to devote himself more and more to prayer for the space of four months. He must then occupy two months in almost continuous prayer, speaking as little as possible to anybody. At the end of this period he invokes a being described as the Holy Guardian Angel, who appears to him (or to a child employed by him), and who will write in dew upon the Lamen, which is placed upon the Altar. The Oratory is filled with Divine Perfume not of the aspirant's kindling. After a period of communion with the Angel, he summons the Four Great Princes of the Daemonic World, and forces them to swear obedience. On the following day he calls forward and subdues the Eight Sub-Princes; and the day after that, the many Spirits serving these. These inferior Daemons, of whom four act as familiar spirits, then operate a collection of talismans for various purposes. Such is a brief account of the Operation described in the book. Samael was identified as the guardian angel and prince of Rome and the archenemy of Israel. By the beginning of Jewish culture in Europe, Samael had been established as a representative of Christianity, due to his identification with Rome. [10] [11] :263 Christianity [ edit ] A guardian angel in a 19th-century print by Fridolin Leiber New Testament [ edit ] Finally, it is worth noting here Crowley's recommendation regarding the use of psychotropic substances to raise the Kundalini and achieve this union with the Angel. He indicates in his commentary, “He may invoke Hadit by "... wine and strange drugs" if he so will”. This is a reference to the Book of the Law, II - 22: “I am the Snake that giveth Knowledge & Delight and bright glory, and stir the hearts of men with drunkenness. To worship me take wine and strange drugs whereof I will tell my prophet, & be drunk thereof! They shall not harm ye at all.”. Hadit is here the same as Kundalini. It is impossible to lay down precise rules by which a man may attain to the knowledge and conversation of His Holy Guardian Angel; for that is the particular secret of each one of us; as secret not to be told or even divined by any other, whatever his grade. It is the Holy of Holies, whereof each man is his own High Priest, and none knoweth the Name of his brother's God, or the Rite that invokes Him. (Book 4, "One Star in Sight")

Having studied The Book of Abramelin during his time with the Golden Dawn, author and occultist Aleister Crowley adapted the concept of the Holy Guardian Angel from Renaissance magic (see above) and made it central to the philosophy and practices of Thelema, popularizing it in the process. The Book of Abramelin is regarded primarily as a guide for the conjuration of a Holy Guardian Angel or Spirit. Rooted in Jewish Mysticism, the Abrahamic language of the text suggests that these spirits are biblical Angels. They serve as intermediaries with a singular, compassionate, and omnipotent God figure consistent with Medieval Jewish idealizations. Later commentators like Aleister Crowley believed the process could be altered to conjure or construct an idealized entity based in any desired language and symbolism at the discretion of the conjurer. Crowley himself performed the primary ritual of Abramelin twice. What does the Book of Abramelin contain?

Frame, Douglas (2009). "Hippota Nestor - 3. Vedic". Center for Hellenic Studies. Archived from the original on 20 September 2019. The barbaric (i.e., without apparent meaning) words roughly correspond to those used in the original PGMs in the part where the evil daimon is exorcised. That is, the magician in the old ritual would be exorcising his own "demons", expelling his own negative influences while balancing his elements. He is removing the obstacles that stand between him and his Angel. Crowley (1973), ch. 83: "It should never be forgotten for a single moment that the central and essential work of the Magician is the attainment of the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. Once he has achieved this he must of course be left entirely in the hands of that Angel, who can be invariably and inevitably relied upon to lead him to the further great step—crossing of the Abyss and the attainment of the grade of Master of the Temple." [1998] 2013. Perspectives on Jewish Thought. Routledge. ISBN 978-1136650123.Crowley felt that attaining Knowledge and Conversation was so important, that he staked the claim that any other magical operation was, in a sense, evil. In Book 4 (Ch. 21) he explains: Continue morning and evening prayers, but ritually cleanse your hands and face with pure water before entering the altar space. Prayers should be prolonged and intensified. The whole body should be washed every Sabbath eve. All instructions of cleanliness and fairness from the first phase must remain, and ideally be strengthened in daily practice. A fast should be undertaken every Sabbath eve. A retreat from society should be made whenever possible, for as long as possible, during this phase. Throughout the history of human salvation that Scripture records, God also entrusts his messages to humanity to special messengers. We know them as the angels, an English translation of the Hebrew word for “messengers” ( mal’akim ). The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the angels are “purely spiritual creatures” with “intelligence and will” who surpass “in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness.” (330) The name “angel,” however, tells us less about what these spiritual beings are, and more about what they do. Throughout Scripture, angels communicate various messages. God entrusted the message of utmost importance — the message about Jesus’s incarnation and humanity’s redemption — to an archangel, Gabriel, who delivered this good news to the Virgin Mary. Methods of Achieving K&C

By the 19th century, the guardian angel was no longer viewed in Anglophone lands as an intercessory figure, but rather as a force protecting the believer from performing sin. A parody appears in Lord Byron's 1819 poem Don Juan: "Her guardian angel had given up his garrison" (Canto I, xvii).

Once the elements have been invoked, it is time to invoke the Spirit. The magician will declare his Aspiration. It is in the absolute intensity of this Aspiration that the key to the success of the ritual lies.Crowley believed that what was experienced during "astral travel" was not relevant in terms of what is "real" or "unreal". He thought that the only value to this practice is in the utility it provides to the practitioner. [h] He believed that the body of light is more important than simply for astral travel—that it is also the storehouse of all experiences. [i] Numerical methods [ edit ] This is the point at which Crowley really traces his own path, conceiving the idea of the death of Osiris and his resurrection as "Myself made Perfect" as a formula proper to the "old Aeon" and no longer appropriate. God communicates and reveals himself to people through various means: through the inspiring power of nature in the world, but also in the “light,” almost “silent sound” in your heart (see 1 Kgs 19:9-11 and especially 12); through sacred Scripture, the Church and the sacraments; through friends and family, like our “ancestors” who received God’s messages through “prophets” (Heb 1:1); and, most importantly, through God’s Son, “whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe.” (Heb 1:2)
