Standing on the beach at Machir Bay today, gazing at a sea which seems to boil and churn, even when calm, one can only imagine the devastating events that once took place. Then, with a sharp intake of salty air and a blast of the Atlantic wind, you perfectly grasp the reasoning behind the naming of Kilchoman’s flagship single malt. The Whisky Holy cow… I mean… just… wow this Kilchoman Machir Bay 2017 reminds me of older Ardbeg. Like the 2016 this is crisp, peaty, fruity, dark and sweet and carries the amazing essence of the early 2000s Ardbeg. It’s just astounding and it’s all I can think about when I’m drinking the ’16 and ’17 releases. From a malt point it makes sense, but from a cask and aging stance it’s completely remarkable.

Can you imagine a 10-year-old Machir Bay? 15? 20? I’m looking forward to the day, but for now I’m all about this Kilchoman Machir Bay 2017. No matter “where” I travel with whatever Islay dram I have in my glass, I’m almost always glad I made the trip. The Islay of my imagination is thus populated by territories of flavour and experience, sea winds of distillate aromas, peaty lochs and rivers of similarities and contrasts, and sensory wonders of taste and discovery. The distillery first filled casks on 14 December 2005 and the distillery began bottling 3-year-old single malt in September 2009. A charity on Islay - Islay Development Initiative - has a range of candles made with Islay beeswax from their apiary of native dark European bees, named after beaches on the island using scents of plants found on each beach. Retrieved 21 January 2023.I’m a fan of the Machir Bay series and this Kilchoman Machir Bay 2017 is no exception – that’s no secret. It’s the penultimate representation of Kilchoman’s style and yet it’s insanely affordable. One sip of this and it’s easy to see why Kilchoman is gaining steam all over the country. The south coast is, of course, dominated by the big three of Ardbeg (lime and meat drippings), Lagavulin (vegetal smoky peat), and Laphroaig (iodine smoke) — not only geographically but, for me at least, in the broad similarities in their flavour profiles (at least compared to the isle’s other distilleries). Bunnahabhain with its salty dried fruit nuttiness sits apart from the south coast three as its house style is unpeated (although they do produce some lovely peated expressions, particularly bottled by IBs), as does Bruichladdich with its barley-rich, farmyard-flavoured core offerings. But Bunna’s and Bruichladdich’s peated expressions too are quite distinct from the south coast three. (Caol Ila’s briny smokiness, of course, has its magical alchemy, being great no matter what kind of cask it sleeps away in.)
