About this deal

Dr Browns every time - baby never had wind issues a friend of mine who fosters babies recommended them and we have never had an issue. We also used the Dr Browns steriliser."Tried and tested by Mumsnet user mommybear1 Our verdict

Electric sterilisers attract limescale on their heating plate over time so will need regularly descaling (manufacturers will specify a frequency, but it’s usually once or twice a month). To reduce limescale build-up, pour out the water after every use and wipe down with a soft damp cloth. You’ll only need to do this with an electric steriliser, and instructions will vary according to the manufacturer’s guidance, although a good rule of thumb is to descale it every 4 weeks, or every 14 days if you live in a hard water area. It’s also the most stylish option, housed in its own wipe-clean zip-up handbag with an adjustable shoulder strap. This is a UV steriliser, so no need for water, steam or chemicals. It works in just three minutes, which is very impressive – just throw in your items, zip the bag and press ‘start’. This only applies to electric sterilisers but is worth bearing in mind nonetheless. Several make loud beeps at the beginning and end of their cycle and some even during, making a dishwasher-like hum. For the first year, your baby's digestive system is super sensitive, and to avoid any tummy upsets you'll need to sterilise your baby feeding equipment using a microwave or electric steam steriliser. The items are sterile after a manufacturer-recommended 15-minute cycle – the NHS recommends 30 minutes – and remain so for as long as they’re in the solution. Plus, they don’t need rinsing off when they’re needed. Items can continue to be added and removed as necessary over 24 hours when the solution will need to be remade. Over the course of nine months, from when my son was a newborn to now, I tested every method for sterilising our gear, across best-selling products from the leading brands, on bottles, pump parts, pacifiers, teethers and tableware. It takes one touch of a button to start a cycle and, if you have any accompanying Tommee Tippee bottles, each bottle is clearly marked to show how much water to add to the steriliser – a thoughtful touch that our tester really appreciated. The Philips UV bulb inside lasts up to 6,000 hours, and - a bonus if you’re watching your electricity bills – it’s more energy efficient than using steam, microwave or boiling. This isn’t cheap, so for infrequent trips you’re better off with the aforementioned Milton’s Solo Travel Steriliser. But if you’re regularly away or just out and about, Nuby’s portable UV unit is a worthy splurge (plus it comes with a Nuby bottle and pacifier, among other extras.)

Our self-sterilising anti-colic baby feeding bottles are multi-award winning, including the Loved By Parents (LPB) Platinum Award 2020, Mother & Baby Awards 2020 and Made for Mums Silver Award in 2019.

Don’t rinse equipment off again afterwards as the water won’t be sterile. You don’t need to dry them as the cloth likely isn’t sterile either – just shake off the excess moisture and make sure it’s cooled down completely. When can you stop sterilising baby bottles?

Our Electric Steam Steriliser not only ensures your baby's bottles are left sterile for up to 48 hours, but it also can act as a bottle warmer in just minutes and is capable of defrosting and heating baby foods. The MAM Microwave Easy Start Bottle and Microwave Steriliser Set is the perfect accompaniment for parents who want to sterilise and bottle feed. Including the steriliser, 3 Easy Start Anti Colic 160ml and 260ml bottles, the device is easy to use and the bottles sterilised in no time. Simply add 200mls of water to the base, place all of your equipment anywhere over the two basket levels and microwave for as little as 5 minutes, this kills 99.9% of germs! To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol) in your bin. Electric sterilisers are units set over a heating plate that heats up water and sterilises the contents with steam. They’re usually generously sized, so can handle up to a day’s worth of bottles all at once, and require almost no preparation and no further outlay to use them regularly. Our tester, Maisie, is a mum of three with a six-year-old, four-year-old and an 11-month-old baby. She spent six months testing the shortlisted products with her own bottles and breast pump parts, each for a minimum of 10 days.I have the Nuby UV one and I love it. I wash the bottles and let them air dry and then put them in there dry for three minutes and it's done! If you're formula feeding Nuby had a sale on their UV steriliser and Rapidcool (can make milk to NHS recommendations and they be cool in 3/4 minutes) bundle." Loved by Mumsnetter Grace185 Our verdict To descale, you’ll need descaling solution which you can easily buy in supermarkets – though most brands now give instructions for an eco-friendly version using vinegar. Pour in the solution over the heating plate and leave to soak for between 30 minutes and 24 hours, depending on the extent of the limescale. Pour out, rinse with cool water, wipe with a damp cloth, then run an empty cycle before using the steriliser as normal. This programme runs for 7 minutes and automatically stops afterwards with 3 long beeps. The lights will stop flashing. Once you've washed and cleaned your breastfeeding pumps, baby bottles, soothers, lids, teats and bottle accessories and milk and powder storage containers, transfer them into your steriliser where bacteria's killed with high-temperature steam.
