Mousehole Cornwall Cottages

Dorothy Hartley described Stargazy Pieas “like a fishy sausage roll with heads protruding”. To me, it doesn’t sound all that appetising, but hey, it’s a Mousehole staple! Visit art galleries I use the term ‘swimming’ lightly – it is a tiny sea pool, nothing like the one in Bude, but if you just want a place to splash around on a hot day, it’s worth visiting! Gaze at the amazing Mousehole Christmas Lights It’s an amazing place to visit at Christmas to get into the festive spirit, and you can enjoy Stargazy Pie at The Ship Inn on 23rd December too! With subtropical plants and a small beachfront, Lamorna Cove is a popular spot for artists due to the area’s natural beauty. It’s a gorgeous whitewashed house with a teal door and windows, potted plants and even has some mice that scurry on the walls (look out for them!).

The event is run solely by volunteers in the village and they often have new projects. The biggest was installing a crucifix on St Clements Island you can see overhead. After the Grenfell Tower fire in London, Cornwall – and Mousehole in particular – invited victims and relatives for a free holiday in an initiative called Cornwall Hugs Grenfell. Guests spent a week in the village, doing sea-based activities, and they made strong connections with locals. There’s a street in Mousehole named Grenfell Street to commemorate this.It is now a huge tradition and event that takes place each year with bigger and better lights. Some within the village, some out on the harbour and even some at sea!

It’s open for visitors from 10 am – 4.30 pm daily, admission is completely FREE but donations are welcome. They chose the village of Mousehole for their honeymoon on the harbour. He called it the “loveliest village in England”! Newlyn residents didn’t forget how Mousehole shut them out, and there was some tension between the two settlements for years after. Penlee lifeboat disaster I applauded this story immediately, heart-warmed that a cat is the most important part of a man’s life, as ours are for us. Like Tom, Mowzer is elderly and knows where her grown-up offspring are around the village. Many stories cherish cats but staying in touch with offspring is extra special. Near Christmas, this perilous storm kept villagers inside their port; cutting them off from food supplies. Tom knew they couldn’t go without for very long and had less to risk than those raising children. Mowzer, of the same accord, wouldn’t contemplate life without Tom and firmly accompanied him. This was fortuitous because it takes a cat, to calm a cat.

However, after saving four people from the ship, the lifeboat was also caught in the storm. Tragically, eight lifeboat staff died in the event, as did eight others from the Union Star. Around the parish, you can meander around gorgeous coastal paths through farmlands and villages, clifftops to find hidden beaches and adorable historic chapels! So begins this lovely, sweet, cozy and thrilling tale of Mowzer, and her human Old Tom. Life was happy and sweet in Mousehole until the one winter when the great Storm-Cat came to play in the harbor, trying to catch mice-men whenever they tried to put out to sea and go fishing. One day, Old Tom decides that he must be the one to bring fish to the starving villagers, for he has no wife or parents to mourn for him if the storm catches him, and his children are all grown. Mowzer feels much the same and, in her love for old Tom, accompanies him. But Mowzer has tamed many a wild tom cat before, and perhaps she will have a way to calm the Storm-Cat, too. Mowzer the cat lives with his owner, Tom the fisherman, in a beautiful seaside village in Cornwall called Mousehole. One day, a huge storm begins to batter the harbour walls, and no-one can leave to fish anymore. With Christmas around the corner, there is no food to be found in the village. So Mowzer and Tom decide to set out to sea and bravely face the Great Storm-Cat together… This is a version of a Cornish story about a brave cat called Mowzer and his owner, Old Tom. When faced with disaster, they find strength in each other to save their town from hunger after a great storm leaves them unable to catch fish.

While all birds which can be released are, some of their injuries mean that they will not survive in the wild. When this is the case, they are offered a permanent home at the sanctuary.Mousehole is also famous for being one of the last bastions of the Cornish language. Dolly Pentreath, who was alleged to be the last monoglot speaker (more information about her below!), lived in the village and died in 1777. Although this theatre looks like an ancient Roman amphitheatre it’s actually only 100 years old and was founded by the wonder woman Rowena Cade. Mousehole used to be known as Porth Enys, which translates to “port of the island,” and it has a rich fishing tradition. Until the 16th century, it was the primary port in Mounts Bay, and it was there until the 13th century. In Science we could look at materials and design a new sail for Old Tom’s boat to help him and Mowzer survive the storm.
