Whatever she's doing, it's working." ―Merrin and Greez Dritus, as the former uses a ritual to hide the Stinger Mantis [1] Taron Malicos (pictured) deceived and manipulated Merrin's pain and suffering from the extermination of her people. I thought Merrin was the most interesting character in the game. I thought her story held a ton of potential. I wanted to know exactly how she was feeling. I love an anti-hero. I love a complicated sort of lady, which we don't get to see a lot in fiction who's still a good guy. I love everything about her. And so I immediately wanted to dive into her perspective, and her thoughts, and her story, and expand it." ―Sam Maggs, author of Jedi: Battle Scars, on writing Merrin [14] Morgan Elsbeth, a human Nightsister, was enraged by the massacre of her people during the Clone Wars. In her rage, she built up the Imperial Navy by plundering entire worlds of their resources. [37] In 9 ABY, [38] the former Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano recounted the story of Elsbeth's people to the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin in 9 ABY. [37]

As the Stinger Mantis crew traveled the galaxy together, they got to know each other better and became like a family with the Mantis as their home. Merrin regarded their differences as strengths that made them nearly unstoppable together, although they were not inclined to have "heart-to-hearts," a term she learned from Cal Kestis. [4] The Nightsisters are an ancient clan of female magic users who hail from the planet Dathomir, a vergence that is strong in the dark side of the Force. The Nightsisters have a strong bond with their planet, which is why they are also known as the Daughters of Dathomir. Dathomir is an important world in Star Wars; the Sith have long sought its secrets, and Palpatine turned to Dathomir when he wanted a new apprentice. He was given a male soldier (dubbed a Nightbrother), who became Darth Maul. It's like you said, Malicos. Dathomir will be your grave." ―Merrin, to Taron Malicos as she buries him alive [1] Mother Talzin was among the strongest witches in her clan, and served as their leader. She was a master at her arcane abilities, with the Nightsisters seeking her guidance. She was also responsible for handling any relations with the galaxy, such as when the malevolent Darth Sidious, an ally of Talzin’s, came to Dathomir and saw the potential in one of the young Nightbrothers. Talzin released the child to Sidious, who raised him as his Sith apprentice, and became known as Darth Maul. In 50 BBY, [26] the clan was forced to give up the young Asajj Ventress to the Siniteen criminal Hal'Sted as insurance for protection. Frethylrin and Irei decided to go into hiding together as friends using the former's network and the latter's technical know-how. As Dritus flew them to Zimara, Merrin talked with them in the engine room and asked about their plans while her wounds were tended to by Frethylrin. Irei left them to talk privately but said Frethylrin had an offer that came from both of them. Frethylrin asked Merrin to come with them. Merrin was touched by the offer and wondered if the other two were resuming their old relationship, but they had both changed too much, and Frethylrin had met Merrin. The Nightsister told the former Imperial she could not go with her because she wanted to stay, but she was grateful for what they had together. They both hoped to see each other again and were proud of each other. [4]The history of the Nightsisters is still something of a mystery. Some in-universe legends claim the first Nightsister was trained by a banished Jedi Master named Allya roughly 600 years before the Skywalker saga, but this is contradicted by Ahsoka episode 2; there, Lady Morgan claims the Nightsisters established the colony of Arcana thousands of years ago, suggesting they are much older than the legends claim. The very fact Lady Morgan's Nightsister powers could interact with a starmap from the mysterious Peridea suggests the Nightsisters may not have their origin in the Star Wars galaxy itself.

I've spent years…of waiting for a chance to avenge my sisters. I'm finished waiting. I wish to fight by your side. Nightsisters and Jedi do not travel together but…survivors. We adapt." ―Merrin, to Cal Kestis [13] When the Mantis crew split up over their differences, Merrin decided to travel the galaxy on her own. On her journey, Merrin came to miss the crew dearly, particularly Cal, whom she said was never far from her thoughts. Eventually, she reunited with Cere, and assisted her with building the Hidden Path. In 9 BBY, Cal and Merrin reunited when Cal traveled to Jedha to meet with Cere. Merrin shared a tender moment with Cal while sheltering in a cave from a sandstorm, and she warned him against being consumed by his obsession with fighting the Empire. While traveling through the deserts of Jedha, the two frequently traded jabs and flirtations. During a tense moment on a mission to destroy an Imperial Trident, Merrin kissed Cal, and the two then worked together to destroy the war machine. After this, Merrin rejoined the Mantis crew to be close to Cal. Cal was initially reluctant, citing the Jedi prohibition on attachments, but eventually decided that the prohibition was wrong, and Merrin and Cal began a relationship following the recovery of the Abyss compass. The night before the crew was to depart for Tanalorr, the two shared a passionate kiss on the cliffs of Jedha. [3] And we're a Jedi and a daughter of Dathomir, fast friends." [both laugh] " We are all bound and connected by the Force. There's nothing unusual about two beings who had not previously met forming a strong connection, falling in love at first sight, even. That's the beauty of our galaxy. It's what makes everything we do worthwhile." ―Merrin and Cere Junda discuss Merrin's connection with Chellwinark Frethylrin [4] Kestis was about to tell Irei and Frethylrin but the pair had slipped away. Merrin believed Frethylrin had chosen to leave with Irei over staying with Merrin. In her burning rage, she asked Kestis to leave Frethylrin to her if there was a future encounter, and he agreed. [4]

Meet the witches of Dathomir.

Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of The High Republic: Light of the Jedi to 232 BBY. The High Republic: A Test of Courage is set concurrently to Light of the Jedi, meaning that its events must occur around that year as well. After the crew kept their distance from each other for a day and a night, Dritus emerged. He scolded Merrin when she tried to help with his balance and she concealed her hurt. Dritus wanted to confront Frethylrin and accused her of leaving them all to die, resulting in losing his arm. Kestis interrupted their shouting, but he also demanded an explanation of her lies and omissions; otherwise, she must leave the ship with Irei. Merrin agreed with him. [4] Such a generous offer, Count. But our loyalty is reserved for only each other." ―Count Dooku and Mother Talzin [28] If you don't let me help—all of us, help—we are all going to die. Us, and eventually every Force-sensitive in the galaxy, and everyone who would ever stand up against the Imperials from now until the end of time." I'd like that very much. Yes. Kiss me one last time? Before we do this difficult and right thing?" ―Merrin and Chellwinark Frethylrin, in the sulfur baths [4]

Star Wars Inside Intel is a StarWars.com feature where Lucasfilm Story Group member Emily Shkoukani, whose job is to know as much about a galaxy far, far away as possible, explores obscure facts about Star Wars lore and continuity. In this installment, Emily analyzes the peculiar coven of Nightsisters…. A period took place known as the Golden Age of the Nightsisters. The clan flourished and the separate Nightsister clans lived in harmony. However, the era nearly came to an end as the clans drifted apart. However, the iron will of new Clan Mother Talzin kept the clans together, [22] unifying them [23] into a single clan. [2] Since their power was at its most potent on their home planet, the Nightsisters rarely ventured off-world during the height of the Galactic Republic. However, this changed under Mother Talzin. During this time, Talzin worked alongside the Sith Lord, Darth Sidious. [24] Talzin became wary of her machinations knowing there could only be two powerful dark side factions at one time due to the Rule of Two. [18] Sidious ultimately betrayed Talzin and took her son Maul from her. [24] At the time of the Clone Wars, Talzin began to sell her sisters' services as mercenaries to the galaxy's wealthy citizens. [25]The Nightsisters are an ancient Force cult composed of female magic users, whose powers are rooted in the dark side of the Force and connected to the planet of Dathomir. Their attempt would ultimately fail, but the attempt was not a complete loss. Dooku would eventuall call on Mother Talzin to provide another apprentice in the form of the Nightbrother Savage Opress. Little did the count know that Opress was under a spell cast on him by Talzin to eventually turn on Dooku and bring the Nightsisters' revenge to life.
