About this deal

The shrub is commonly used as a hedge plant because of its stunning colour transition. It also produces beautiful, white flowers in spring, so long as the plant was not previously pruned. Red Robin is not only used for hedges, but it could also be used for screens, or shaped into a specimen tree. In a year, Red Robin can grow up to 30cm (1ft), so keep it under control and encourage bright young leaves by cutting stems down by 15cm (6in), just above the outward-facing buds. Most soils can be suitable for this type of plant, but it does best in a deep loam and is not dependent on the specific type.

I had a fully grown (pot grown) photinia planted in front of a fence about three and a half years ago. It took a while to get going, and lost almost all its leaves, but it seemed to rally just fine and last year it was covered with lovely white flowers. This is the only time it flowered. Will it do so again? I've never pruned it. Should I? Bill replies... The Photinia Red Robin is an ornamental evergreen hedge plant that grows in the eastern part of the US. Its name is derived from its young, glossy, red leaves which change to dark green as they mature. These leaves grow up to 10cm in length. The best method for propagating Photinia ‘Red Robin’ and other P. × fraseri cultivars is by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings. Propagating Photinia by Cuttings This is a family of North American and Asian shrubs – with most of those used in gardens being forms of the hybrid P. x fraseri– evergreen hybrids which are grown for their colourful young foliage. 1 Photinia. (n.d.). Kew Royal Botanic Gardens. Retrieved March 22, 2023, from https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:30014031-2In cases of only partial damage, the spotted leaves can be removed and burned as soon as they’re noticed, but in cases of more severe damage there are two options: According to traditional wisdom, stems should be pruned just above the leaf nodes. Our experience has shown that no special pruning techniques are required. We have pruned ours using a hedge trimmer without any adverse effects. The plant sprouts healthy new red shoots as soon as you cut it down, regardless of the method you use. After six to eight weeks in new compost, pot-grown Photinia ‘Red Robin’ will need feeding monthly from March to August with a balanced, slow release fertiliser with trace elements: specific formulations are now available from garden centres for shrubs, and these are ideal. Re-Potting Both my potted red robin photinias get eaten by something that looks like a small green caterpillar in a white cocoon on the new fresh leaves? Bill replies...

Drain the water from the pot and wrap it with a thin plastic film or dip it in cling wrap to secure. Plant markers will work as good holders for this. Photinia (Red Robin) Kay is usually grown for its beautiful red leaves and these appear on newly formed shoots and regular pruning will encourage new shoots and obviously new red leaves. With regard to the flowering of your Photinia flowers will appear frequently on large established plants which do not receive regular pruning.Shrubs: The variegated shrubs Euonymus Emerald Gaiety, Emerald Gold and Choisya Ternata Sun Dance which will give you contrasting colours and you can also incorporate Hebe species such as Pinguifolia and Great Orme. You can also incorporate Lavender Augustifolia. The young leaves emerge in vivid reds and pinks, and the variegation develops through the spring and early summer, though the leaves retain a slight pinkish tinge until autumn when they develop a deeper burgundy or bronze colour. It will grow to 4m but colours better when regularly trimmed as a hedge or trained shrub. Photinia × fraseri ‘Louise’ The plant also produces sparse, creamy-white flowers, which give way to the leaves. Some people find these flowers quite unpleasant and cannot stand their smell. Botanical Description Of The Plant Once established, shrubs generally do not require much water. However, at first they need careful, frequent watering and should not be left to dry out. I have two photinia red robin trees in pots and they have become infested with brown leaf spots. The spots are ubiquitous across both trees. Can you advise what I can do to restore them please?
