About this deal

Yes, there have been one or two very very good performances but they do tend to be the exception rather than the rule. A swing of over 5 points is quite rare so the first three rounds really do matter. Although not publicised on-air, all contestants were given KF-branded clothes and a sports bag as prizes. Substandard though the 1995 series was, it nevertheless threw up a few surprises, such as one of the finalists, John Reynolds, who had apparently practised for the assault course on a children's playground. It must have paid off, since he won the assault course in all three of his games. Another contestant, Mandy Wertheim, was competing in the show partly to raise money for the charity for which she worked. As she revealed to Penny Smith when she won her initial heat, she had been promised extra money if she won - so she clearly raised a goodly sum. In addition, two contestants were disqualified for failing to complete 'Krypton Mountain' correctly. One contestant, future The News Quiz host Simon Evans, did not complete the computer test correctly, and was told of his disqualification on top of the mountain, in a scene clearly recorded after the fact. The other contestant, Alison Riley, was disqualified the following week for forcing the batons out of their holders in the Response Revolve without waiting for the lights to come on - unlike Evans, she was edited out of the remainder of the round. Have to admit to have been waiting for this moment for ever. The simple format of this show was what made it good, plus the fact that the challenges were actually difficult made it compelling as a viewing. As for presenter, has to be Gordon Burns, though Jeremy Paxman would be pretty decent also.

The original assault course was at Holcombe Moor, near Bury in Greater Manchester. The 2009 assault course is at " Adrenalin", an activity centre near Richmond in North Yorkshire. Speed Round: The General Knowledge round. Depending on the series, the round lasted for between one and three minutes. Unusually, and possibly uniquely for the time ( This Is Your Life being the only other show we can think of), the show up until 1992 had no advert break in the middle even though it was in a primetime 7pm slot. This happened because The Krypton Factor had been commissioned as an "educational" programme, and education shows weren't allowed to have internal breaks. Rules were relaxed in 1993, which explains why some of the elements (most notably, the time for the quiz) were shortened in the last two series. And then they are slide down the "washing line" pegs as if they were really hung out to dry. They are told to bend their knees before landing in a muddy puddle at the bottom - (in earlier series not so much water was there, but rumour had it that the someone added more water to it before the start of the race). Finally, they have to crawl under netting on the floor before running, wet and muddy to the end, breaking the ribbon and being declared the winner. This was where Marian Chanter twisted her ankle jumping off one of the apparatus, and was seen with her foot in plaster on the show itself - amazingly, she became the first female winner of the series in 1987.According to my stats for series 1 and 2, the average team scores 4-5-6-5 points on rounds 1/2/3/4 so the Missing Vowels round is no more valuable than the Sequences. From 1986 to 1991, each round was introduced by the distinctive K logo, which would morph into a symbol for the round. A similar version of this was used in the 2009 revival.

The Krypton Factor featured a string of tough challenges including mental agility, physical ability and general knowledge, involving puzzles, aeroplane simulators and assault courses. Ideally the scoring should have been an average of all the rounds, but I guess that would just have blown most of the audience's minds. Failing that, they should have made the point scores for all the other rounds at least double, if not more, to counterbalance the General Knowledge round. The Super Round was also notable for a few incidents regarding cheating; in Group B, two contestants (both wearing yellow) were disqualified for unknowingly breaking the rules of the Super Round. Heat 1 contestant Simon Evans was disqualified as he had not completely finished all four words at the Laser Matrix computer (having produced a "j" instead of an "h" in the third word) yet continuing through the rest of the round regardless (Penny told him about his disqualification at the top of the Krypton Mountain) and in Heat 2 the following week, contestant Alison Riley was disqualified as she had forcibly pulled out batons from the Response Revolve when their adjacent lights weren't flashing and unlike Evans, she was edited out of the remainder of the round after she had begun her ascent on the ladder and a replay was shown of her illegal move. As a result of their actions, Simon Evans and Alison Riley were the only two contestants in Krypton Factor history to be disqualified. Mental Agility went through several versions before settling into the Speed Round test of memory and detail juggling of later series. Initially, contestants were asked increasingly difficult questions in turn, and would be eliminated if they answered incorrectly. By the early 1980s, this had changed to seeing a series of nine images, each accompanied by a statement read by Charles Foster of which four were true and five were false; the contestants had to select the four true statements, and would receive 2 points for each correct choice, and a bonus of 2 points for getting all four.

How it works

Adrenalin in North Yorkshire markets itself as the home of the obstacle course from the TV series, which offers paying public a chance to take on the Assault course. [11]
