NSM will enhance collaboration and interoperability with several of our key strategic partners. In the North Atlantic and Baltic Sea Region users, and soon to be users, include Norway, the US, Poland, Germany, and Canada. Both the US and Australia will operate NSM in the Pacific region. The Florida-based group started when the Rebel Legion base in the state got its first Wookiee costume. Jason Rucci wanted to dress like a Wookiee but soon learned it was a challenging process: The original costume for Chewbacca was designed by the husband and wife team Stuart and Kay Freeborn. Stuart Freeborn was a special effects and make-up artist who worked on some notable films including 2001: A Space Odyssey, and of course, Star Wars. For 2001, Freeborn made the ape suits for the unnerving Dawn of Man sequence which perhaps went on to inspire his work on the costume for Chewbacca. Mayhew's Chewbacca costume has a base of mohair (made up of rabbit and goat fur) and gets its lustrous lengths from real yak fur. As of Episode III, the suit also now features a high-tech water-cooling system to enable longer filming stints and a more comfortable experience for the wearer.
By 1974, Chewbacca had acquired his ammunition bandolier thanks to Ralph McQuarrie and by 1975, the original concept art has a very odd Lemur-like Chewbacca that is nonetheless recognizable from the head down. Chewbacca's mouth moves mechanically along with the actor (Peter Mayhew) as he speaks - much like the mechanism on show in the infamous Chewbacca Mom mask video.What we already understand of the Chewie/Solo relationship is that Solo keeps him around for a reason. Beyond being indebted and honour-bound, Chewbacca is a pretty mean engineer and helps to keep the Millennium Falcon running. I came across the group while attending MegaCon in Orlando earlier this year and was impressed by the accessories and fur they had on display -- no, that's not a sentence I get to say often. They've clearly put effort into constructing their Wookiee costumes and figuring out the process to help others. At one point, they even got some personal insight on construction from Angie Mayhew, the wife of Chewbacca, Peter Mayhew.
Peter Mayhew has played Chewbacca right from the start. Thanks to his impressive 7'3" height and sparkly blue eyes, Mayhew was the perfect fit for the character and Lucas made the casting decision within seconds of meeting the actor for the first time.
