About this deal

I carefully measured (and re-measured) and cut my first two pieces. The kids were walking all over at this point, so I had to do a couple of stain spot treatments to clean it. I also steamed it because it was a bit wrinkly too. Notice how different the colours look depending on which way the fabric is?

We love the mix of leather bed headboard teamed with light-grey textured fabric panels above, and it makes for a comfortable setting. Note the rectangular lines echoed in the lamps, giving this bedroom a neat, symmetrical feel to it that's classic and timeless. What can I use instead of a headboard? https://www.housebeautiful.com/uk/renovate/upcycle/news/a365/how-to-make-a-fabric-covered-headboard/ Bad news though: there was only one piece, and it would just accommodate the size I needed. (I wrote down the sizes of the wood, but figured I could play a bit and overestimated my measurements). Nothing else was speaking to me, but they sent me the other materials (bottom too dark/blue, right one a bit too green) just in case I ran out and had to piece something together. Emily Bowser here with the DIY headboard how-to I promised in the reveal of my bedroom from earlier today. This is what I’m calling “A guide for the person who poses as a DIYer but whatever, it gets the job done.” Enjoy, and let me know if you need any clarity or have questions in the comments. Prep:Yes, you can put a headboard on an existing bed frame. Although traditionally it is easier to attach a headboard to a bed frame of a similar size, it is also possible to fit an oversized headboard to the wall behind the bed. What is the reason for a headboard? The cleats have multiple areas where you can attach screws and basically SOMEWHERE on that cleat will line up with a stud. At least if your panels are as wide as mine where (studs are typically 16 or 24 inches apart). This way you don’t have to mess with anchors and you know that headboard will adhere to the wall FOREVER. Attach the wall side of the cleat to the wall at the determined measurement from the floor. (Note: cleats will come with all the hanging things.) Because there wasn’t much fabric to work with, I only wrapped the bare minimum of what I would need. The process is the same as installing the batting, I just used about double the staples ha :)

Step 1: Measure and mark plywood with a pencil. Do an okay job with the jigsaw, cutting the plywood down to the correct-ish size. It’s not exactly the right tool for the job, but it works. Kinda. Step 3: Attach the other side of the cleat to the panel so that when you connect the two pieces of the cleat, the panel will sit where you want it. I learned after the first panel that I should do it a bit lower so I didn’t have to be all up in Erik’s over-stapled upholstery situation. So for me, every cleat was in a different spot. Again, it doesn’t matter where the cleats are, just that once they are connected, wall to panel, they hang at the same height as each other. Step 4: Watch Erik do the same to the velvet this time with wine in hand. He stapled the velvet layer over the batting. Comment on why can’t step 9 and 10 be combined? He tells you to shut up and to pour him more wine. From painted shapes to wallpapered panels, or even a fabric wallhanging or screen, there's plenty of ways to get the effect of a headboard without actually having one. Think about what you'd like to see behind the bed, whether it's your favourite colour or a piece of fabric that you like – and remember that because it's just a small area, you can afford to be bold without your choice overpowering the room.Step 3: Lay batting on floor, place plywood piece on top, roughly cut it 2-3 inches bigger than the plywood and watch Erik staple it around all the edges. Note: I invested in a plug-in stapler years ago and have NEVER regretted it. I originally thought I would screw the two pieces of wood together and THEN add the foam/batting/fabric – but that would have been too complicated. The second piece just sits on the side, again wedged in behind the mattress. Step 2: Use a stud finder, pray it works (I MEAN. WHY??), and mark where every stud is in the area where the headboard will be, because… If you go with non-spray glue, just be sure to spread it so that it’s a nice thin layer as opposed to glops. We’ve passed the halfway point on the 2021 Spring One Room Challenge and are rounding the finish line. The kids’ bedroom still looks really similar to how it has been, but we’re getting there. Yesterday I finished the wraparound headboard DIY, and I have all the details! I knew I wanted to do something a bit different for each (because of the placement of their beds), but I think it can be easily recreated.

It looks like a lot is left, but most of those tasks shouldn’t take too long. I’m hoping to have the walls primed and the wallpaper up for next week, but we shall see! Then there’s one more week to get things done before the final reveal. My plan is to figure out all those little things that last week, then get the paint when stores open just before the reveal. I had a few little pieces of off-cuts from my angled sections, and I used them to cover the exposed wood section. It looks so good right!? Either way, Élise was happy with her new bed setup! At bedtime, I asked if she liked it and if it was comfortable. She said yes, and that it felt just like a sofa. I think that’s a compliment? This was because I was “mounting” the headboards directly behind the mattress, sitting on the bed frame. I didn’t want the foam taking up space (and definitely didn’t have enough fabric to go all the wall across). Step 2: Assemble friends. You don’t need more than one person to do this and you definitely don’t need three, especially when you only own one staple gun but DIY with friends is more fun.
