About this deal

An Cnoc has its fair share of lovers and haters. I’m neither, but I can say that the 12 yr old in particular is very, very interesting. When I say that a malt is interesting, that’s usually a compliment. But I’m not entirely sure if that’s the case here. Rarely does reviewing a whisky have me so confused. I really don’t know what to make of this stuff. At all. Here are my notes: The colour is a bright pale gold. The nose is bright as well, fresh and fruity, with honey, lemon citrus and baskets of barley sugar. Some cocoa as well, and a little briny. Sweet and refreshing, perfect on a hot summers day like today. Water seems to add an almost peaty element to it! An Cnoc 12 year old should easily fit into a nice summer evening with friends. It's a light romantic comedy such as (500) Days of Summer, without the complexity though. The 500 days aren't there in An Cnoc's favor. They're there because An Cnoc 12 was too common (not that the movie was...). I'm not on a tight budget, per se, but I'm very far from being "well healed" either. But I'm a whisky nut. It's my hobby right now, and I embrace the magic of the dram. Over the past five years, I've tasted some really top notch drams like a 30-something Brora and a few glasses of Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 3.

And beside what person when confronted with it would own up to it. And no one wants to beleive that about themselves, yet they are. Mouth: Sweet to bitter: Grass sap, unsweetened caramel, grape nuts (Post co. cereal), anise, hot buttered white wheat toast, pie crust, tart apples. That amorphism is throwing me off, but it has a medium body and a cold smooth feel to it. Without seeing Serge's score last night when I filmed a video review of this whisky, I scored it first an 82, then raised my score to an 84, which happens to be the same as Serge's. I just polished another bottle of this, for you folks who might be thinking you’d like to buy a bottle and are wondering what it really tastes like, because the review of it given here is, well – worthless, it’s just another bit of so much hot air, that tells you absolutely nothing. After reading it you still have no idea what you’re in for if you buy a bottle, and you know darn well after you taste it, what you taste will be nothing at all like what the reviewers have said. After the war, with the distillery connected to the national grid, the steam powered engine, which had been used since its founding, was retired in 1947. [4]

A one point in time, using CERTAIN terms to describe things was needed and served a purpose, and even then only by people in the industry who needed to communicate the REALITY of what a beverate tasted like. The most basic example of what I’m talking about are the terms ‘sweet’ and ‘dry’ When dealing with wine, certain simple tastes were used to further define, like cranberry for a Rhone Wine or cherry for Rioja, and just one word or two to put the idea across, there was a purpose for that, and those few words conveyed the idea. And people in the industry knew what was ment by those few and simple words. Now then…. about anConoc 12, my telling someone that it is “SIMILAR” to Macallan tells them way more about what it taste like than your “dried/jammy fruit” – what does that mean ? how dried ? how jammy ? and what kind of fruit ? excuse me but that is about as ambiguous as saying it tastes like purple buttons.FINISH: malty, a hint of sour kiwi and some fresh white fruits. Long, but very delicate. So delicate, in fact, that it's easy not to notice it at all. But it's there. 19/25 trythis That is an excellent point, and totally correct. It could also be said that those industry terms (sweet vs. dry vermouth, for example), which made a lot of sense to the industry types only served to confuse customers who ended up exposed to those words. “Dry?? It’s a liquid, how can it be dry?” Yes, over the past few years I've become a bit of a whisky snob, so please forgive me if my review of the An Cnoc 12 is a little less than upbeat.

On the palate, more honey with a creamy mouthfeel - this has some body to it. The vanilla and citrus is very much in keeping with the nose, absolutely delicious. A little brighter with water, believe it or not - and spicier. The Gaelic word means ‘the beautiful hollow by the broad bay’ - though this has been disputed with some citing that the name Laphroaig is actually derived from the Norse ‘ breid-vik’, meaning broad bay. Glen Garioch (Region: Highlands and Islands, Location: Oldmeldrum) The distillery sits at the heart of the picturesque town of OldmeldrumWhiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. He who says least says most. – or as they say in these here parts – “just give me the straight skinny” Palate: Very watery mouthfeel. I get some banana cream, honey, pecan, grass, Frosted Flakes, milk, and apple vinegar. These build up to a crescendo of Indian spices. Think cumin, curry, and mustard. You go on to say that you use ‘strawberry’ to identify fruity. Why ? just say fruity, just say sweet. Saying strawberry puts an unrealistic impress in the readers mind that they will taste strawberry, which is only what, as you admit, you THINK it tastes like, However if you say fruity, most tastetd would agree and say – Yea it’s fruity. Finish: Medium length, bitter fruit, grass sap, English muffin (toasted), some bitter alcohol but not much burn. A little in the middle of the tongue. Body: Light and unfortunately watery. Upfront are bananas dipped in caramel sauce, developing into dry haw or straw, and finally some bitter notes: not citrus but woody: green sap or freshly-cut pine or birch logs. A dash of water may amp up the sweet honey character. Nose: Some sharp alcohol bitterness, even at 40%. This said, I will not add water. The palate won't support any more water, IMO. Floral nose with nectarine, green apples, prunes, Queen Anne's lace, living grass, compote. Just a hint of honey, along with model airplane glue (a minus in my book) and some slightly curdled malt.Everyone has to agree it has a sherried flavor, but many people would agree it taste like banana, why not a fudge pop, or a bacon cheesburger, or cherried road apples. The finish is of medium length and pleasantly warming. Soft wood spice mingles with notes of honey and cereal.
