A mighty overhaul for the classic controller

Because Akai Professional and Ableton designed the APC40 specifically for Ableton Live, you don’t need to map its controls to talk to the software. Just connect your laptop to the APC40 via USB and you're ready to make magic. The APC40 is plug and play, so you don't need to install drivers. First-time setup is literally three steps: load Ableton Live, plug in and power up your APC40, and select the APC40 as Ableton Live's controller. That's it. No mapping, no setup, no hassles. With the extra colours, and the new buttons, this incarnation of the APC40 is more Vegas and EDM than the earlier model. Pad quality and feel aren't really considerations on something like this. These aren't velocity or pressure responsive; you won't be using them to tap in drum beats.

or a more traditional musician using Live on stage or in the studio, you will find the APC40 mkII to be Composers and performers alike will appreciate the User mode on the main channel rotaries. On the original, the knobs could only be switched between Pan and Sends A–C; now a single Sends button gives access to up to eight Sends. The User button switches the pots to generic MIDI controllers, allowing you to use Live’s MIDI Map mode to take control of any parameter. This is important, as the MIDI assignments of the APC are fixed so you can’t override controls. On the MkI, the best you could do was use one bank of Send controls for other purposes and avoid using that Send ID in Live. Now you have a bank of eight custom controls. Summary veteran APC40 users will immediately notice the enhancements that include an RGB clip-launching grid,The Akai Professional APC64 Ableton MIDI Controller with Sequencer is a powerful and innovative controller designed specifically for Ableton Live. With its 64 RGB velocity-sensitive pads and poly-aftertouch, this controller offers unparalleled control and performance capabilities. Whether you're in the studio or on stage, the APC64 allows you to take your music creation and live performances to new heights. That said it's good for far more than just mixing. It's incredibly fun to create with this pairing. My first day with it it was intoxicatingly fun making music with the both of these. I hardly had to look at the screen and I never touch the mouse. APC40 mkII features a 5x8 RGB clip-launching grid that’s built for dexterous exploration: launch clips

The original APC40 was showing its age in some ways, so an update isn't too much of a surprise, and it was launched long enough ago that nobody who bought the original should feel like they have a complaint. It is currently Mac OS X only, and because Apple's Java implementation is broken with some aspects of javax.sound.midi, it requires the mmj libraries found here - http://www.humatic.de/htools/mmj.htm

From the README file: apc40-mode is a simple Java utility to switch between the three firmware modes of the Akai APC40 MIDI Controller, as described at http://www.akaipro.com/apc40map and in http://www.akaipro.com/extras/product/apc40/APC40_Communications_Protocol_rev_1.pdf Now separately i have created a custom routine that is able to drive plugins which live in the inspector panel of Davinci Resolve and for OFX / VST plugins only for the 1st 16 horizontal sliders of that plugin. Presents eight fully customisable touch strips, facilitating hands-on command of devices, expression, mixer, and more The 8x8 pad matrix features 64 velocity-sensitive RGB pads that are perfect for launching clips and performing a wide range of functions. The controller also includes eight fully assignable Touch Strip controllers, giving you the ability to add expression to your performances. From adjusting volume and effects sends to controlling your mix, the Touch Strips put important parameters at your fingertips. The APC64 also includes a copy of Ableton Live Lite complete with a collection of plugins from Air Instruments and Sonivox spanning everything from classic synths and keyboards to cutting-edge/vintage effects. If that wasn't enough, Sampletools by CR2 Records is also included, comprised of an additional 1GB of loops and drum samples. Serves as a standalone sequencer and external hardware controller, allowing disconnection from the computer and connection to synths and drum machines via 3x 1/8-inch MIDI ports
