About this deal

Our keen-eared reviewers listen to a huge variety of musical genres from a range of sources during testing, including Spotify, Tidal and locally stored audio files. We’ll also put earbuds through their paces across whichever Bluetooth codecs they support using a compatible device and feed them high-resolution content if they have Hi-res capabilities.

Their size has a couple of advantages. One is that you can slide your fingertip up and down on the outside to control the volume. The other is that they grip your ear better, with a choice of three ear tips and three ‘stability bands’ – making these a reasonable choice for exercising, if the high price didn’t put you off (you’d hate to lose one in a puddle). With that all being said, it should come as no surprise that the reviewer was very impressed by the audio experience on offer, delivering naturalistic and precise tones all the way down to 10Hz. The buds deliver deep, rapid and extensively detailed low frequencies, with a similarly controlled top-end boasting crisp treble sounds with just enough bite to make the high frequencies shine. The next-gen buds build on traditional Bose hallmarks, but we feel battery life, special features, and touch controls could be bettered at the price. Despite these shortcomings, though, we found their ANC and sound quality performance carry the QuietComfort Earbuds 2 to the top echelon of ourbest wireless earbudslist. This next-gen flagship model are highly recommended for anyone seeking the ultimate ANC experience from a pair of earbuds. Apple’s Spatial Audio is another headline feature, and there’s even an all-new Adaptive Transparency mode, which is highly effective. Pressure and touch-sensitive controls add another layer of usability, with a simple swipe of the earbuds stem now adjusting volume, while the buds’ battery life has been boosted to six hours of listening with ANC engaging. For those that own an iPhone, iPad or MacBook, the brilliant AirPods Pro 2 are the wireless earbuds to buy. Several earbuds that we recommend do offer IPX7 protection – often the most high-end or sport-focused options – which should be suitable for most users who are just looking for solid sweat, splash and rainproof options. This time, the “7” means the earbuds should be waterproof up to 1m for a period of 30 minutes. With more than 30 years experience in testing and reviewing consumer audio products for all kinds of media outlets and big-name brands around the world, the Tom's Guide audio team follows a rigorous test regime when it comes to determining the best products for recommendation in our buying guides. Of course, the high-end price tag isn’t just due to the hybrid functionality on offer (that’d be ridiculous), in fact it’s the rest of the innards – including 18mm planar magnetic transducers – that bring the price tag right up. Calls sound clear, and the battery life is seven hours from the buds and a further 28 hours from the charging case. Amazingly it all feels fairly premium too. The Bluetooth 5.0 connection is solid and stable and for the money, the wireless earbuds offer an energetic and spacious sound. We found set-up to be slightly fiddly the first time (there’s a B&O app which wants to get involved, adding a layer of confusion), but once the BeoPlay EX buds are going, they’re a thrilling listen.

We’re here to help with this this list of the best wireless earbuds we’ve tested. With so many true wireless models available, we get the chance to test a lot number of them each year, ranging from affordable choices to premium pairs, so we’ve got the knowledge to assess which are ‘very good’ and which are the ‘very best’.The design has been changed from the original QuietComfort Earbuds, ditching the bulbous shape and Stay Hear tips for a shape that fits into the ear better. A slight disappointment is that we can still hear some minor wind noise, which we had hoped had been fully eradicated with the new design. Updated October 2023: We've added the latest AirPods Pro, Jabra Elite 8 Active, Sony WF-1000XM5, Beats Studio Buds +, Jlab JBuds Mini, Technics EAH-AZ80, Oneplus Buds Pro 2, and JBL Tour Pro. Any sound comparison between these cheap in-ears and class-leading products. But these JLab buds beat everything in their price range for sound. Our testing proved that vocals are relatively well handled through the mids, the bass is sensibly handled, and the soundstage is relatively expansive.

Every month seems to bring new sets of earbuds with longer battery life and more compact designs. As such, we can't list everything we like. But if you're still hunting, here are some other recommendations. Pleasingly, these come with a whole range of adjustable ear tips (an extra that’s missing from many ear buds) which means that you can find one that makes for a good ‘seal’ inside your ear. This makes a huge difference not just to headphones falling out, but also to the sound. The best thing about them, though, is the personalisation. There’s an equaliser function on the app, with Balanced, More Bass, More Treble and Voice settings or, my favourite, ‘Personal Sound Profile’. This optimises the sound for you alone, based on a five-minute hearing test – various tones and sounds in each ear – which feels quite scientific and does indeed give you a richer, more detailed sound. Sound quality:Different models offer different sound, and since you’re buying a pair to enjoy music individually, it’s important to find headphones that match your sound preference, be it heavy bass or distinctively clear to where you can hear the littlest nuances in recordings. Some models like the NuraTrue Pro (top) offer personalized sound via companion app, which allows the user to create their own profiles and tweak EQ levels to their hearing. It’s amazing what the best wireless earbuds are capable of thanks to advancements in Bluetooth, noise-cancelling, microphone and audio driver technology.

Formed by OnePlus founder Carl Pei with help from iPod designer Tony Fadell, UK tech firm Nothing were a surprise new entry in our guide to the best smartphones for their extremely quirky Phone 1. These buds are designed to go with it – although they work with any phone – and share its distinctive look. Both the earbuds and the case have see-through exteriors so you can see the metal workings. I had a Walkman like that in 1985.
