About this deal

Sunlight is the main source of blue light, and being outdoors during daylight is where we get most of our exposure to it. But there are many other sources of blue light — including LED lighting and flat-panel screens. If you have even mild nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, prescription computer glasses can optimize your vision specifically for the distance from which you view your devices. This is especially important if you also have age-related presbyopia. On the other hand, virtually all visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens and reaches the retina. 4. Blue light contributes to visual discomfort. The result is that you lose the ability to see the center of your field of vision. You may still be able to see things on the periphery. But details and objects in the center of your sight lines may become blurry and, over time, more difficult to see. The important thing to remember is that blue light is a natural part of sunlight, and helps to keep us alert. The issue is when that blue light comes at times – say, late in the day – that mess with your circadian rhythm, telling your brain that it isn’t yet time to shut down for bed.

Blue light from sunlight is very important in regulating circadian rhythm — our natural wakefulness and sleep cycle. Exposure to blue light from the sun during daytime hours helps maintain a healthy circadian rhythm. Blue light filters and protective eyewear

Most of us weren’t particularly aware of blue light until manufacturers discovered the quality with which blue-light-heavy LED technology can produce light and colour, with supreme efficiency in both power and size – ideal for electronic lighting and smart devices. Now that these devices have become our interface with the world, many of us stare at blue light all day, and long after the Sun goes down. Is blue light ruining my sleep? Driller MW, et al. (2019). Hunger hormone and sleep responses to the built-in blue-light filter on an electronic device: a pilot study. Kim TG, et al. (2020). Photochemical retinopathy induced by blue light emitted from a light-emitting diode face mask. If blue light does have adverse health effects, then environmental concerns, and the quest for energy-efficient lighting, could be at odds with personal health. Those curlicue compact fluorescent lightbulbs and LED lights are much more energy-efficient than the old-fashioned incandescent lightbulbs we grew up with. But they also tend to produce more blue light.

These filters are available for smartphones, tablets, and computer screens and are available wherever electronics are sold. Eye Strain You may experience digital eye strain from looking at screens for too long due to the fact that blue light scatters more easily than other lights, which can reduce contrast.Blue light generally is defined as visible light ranging from 380 to 500 nm. Blue light sometimes is further broken down into higher energy blue-violet light (roughly 380 to 450 nm) and lower energy blue-turquoise light (roughly 450 to 500 nm). Digital eyestrain means different things to different people, but is generally related to the focusing system of the eyes.

Vandewalle, G., Maquet, P., & Dijk, D. J. (2009). Light as a modulator of cognitive brain function. Trends in cognitive sciences, 13(10), 429–438. Blue light filters reduce the amount of HEV blue light emitted from these devices from reaching your eyes without affecting the visibility of the display. Some are made with thin tempered glass that also protects your device's screen from scratches. Blue light scatters more easily than most other visible light. This may make it difficult for your eye to focus when receiving blue light. Instead, your eye may digest blue light as poorly focused visual static. This reduction in contrast may make it more difficult for your eye to process blue light, potentially contributing to eyestrain. Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson say: “Every writer wants to explore their own place, and their own society as authentically and as honestly as they can. We feel enormously grateful to BBC drama for letting us do that with Blue Lights. And to do it with a cast boasting so much new and established talent makes it even more exciting.”

Why is blue light used by some doctors?

Grace (Siân Brooke), a mother of a teenage boy, has made the decision in her 40’s to leave her steady job as a social worker to join the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Having previously worked in social care she straddles a fine line between the personal and professional. It’s the biggest gamble of her life, and just a few weeks into the job, she’s making so many mistakes that her decision no longer looks like a winning bet.
