About this deal

I let the draft rest, went on vacation to Puerto Rico, and returned, hoping to get started. But first, I had to do a bit more research into cookie manufacturing, which took me an extra month. Serial Spouse: Gerry has been married three times. He divorced his first wife Avril to marry his second wife Ashleigh, then divorced her to marry his third and current wife Dilly. Avril gives the impression he tends to trade in his wives for younger, prettier women every decade or so and initially assumes Gerry left Dilly for another woman when she and Beauty turn on Avril's doorstep, only for Dilly to state that she left Gerry. Gerry's selfishness and controlling behavior also probably doesn't make him the best partner, especially if his treatment of Dilly is anything to go by. Not with Them for the Money: Dilly tries to explain to Gerry that she was never remotely interested in his ability to afford expensive gifts; all she wanted was for him to "look after [her]" (implying she wanted a father figure more than anything). Gerry doesn’t seem to be able to comprehend this. Important Haircut: Towards the end of the novel, Beauty gets her long hair cut short. Previously, she’d never been allowed to cut her hair, so it’s a sign of her breaking free from Gerry's control and becoming more of her own person. Everyone agrees that it suits her much better and she gains a much needed confidence boost.

It’s implied that Dilly’s mother wasn’t particularly nice to her either; Dilly moved out at sixteen because her mother got a boyfriend Dilly disliked and she's made little effort to maintain a relationship with Dilly over the years. Sweet Baker: Dilly is a kindhearted and optimistic cookie-baker, who is particularly devoted to ensuring her daughter is safe and happy.Bratty Half-Pint: Skye and her Girl Posse are cruel, snobby and manipulative; Skye is particular is an Attention Whore who loves to show off and hates it when other kids - especially Beauty - are in the spotlight. Brian Hart Hoffman has delivered one of the best cookie cookbooks which include the chocolate chip chapter, based on his own baking style.” Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Rhona, to a certain extent. When Beauty casually mentions that she would love to have a pet rabbit Rhona gets her one for her birthday, thinking it would be a perfect gift. She's right, but she has no idea that Gerry has forbidden Beauty from having pets and is secretly furious. After all the guests leave, Gerry lets the rabbit out of its hutch and it is killed, which finally results in Dilly breaking up with him and leaving with Beauty. Beauty doesn't blame Rhona and even avoids telling her the details so as not to upset her, knowing she was just trying to be a good friend.

Age-Gap Romance: Gerry is implied to be much older than Dilly; she was barely out of her teens when they married, whereas he went through two marriages before her, and all three of Beauty's half-brothers are fully-grown.

Cookie's life is basically over. Her best friend in the whole world is moving to Solihull because one of her dads has a new job there. Solihull?! Where even is that?! I also feel that the character of Beauty's father was particularly well portrayed. He obviously felt a certain amount of love and affection for his daughter and wife, and wasn't only a villain. However, he was capable of some truly awful things. It was nice to see a character in a younger child's book rendered in many different shades of grey. Keep working on your craft– I thought I knew everything there is to know because I’d written a whole novel, but I learned you can never know enough. I followed other author’s recommendations and found new tools to help take my novel to the next level. I hope I can write the next book in less time, with fewer rewrites.
