About this deal

Cover the pudding with a pleated sheet of buttered parchment, then a pleated sheet of oil, and tie firmly around the rim with string. As Chris explains, “The pub has a lot of history, and is said to be where, centuries ago, a local police officer arrested a gang of regulars who also happened to be sheep rustlers. He became known as ‘The Surrey Copper’ and it just seemed to fit with the rest of our thinking.” Our ethos is traditional,” says Chris. “Our gins to date have been classic London dry gins, made with plenty of juniper – that’s important to us. We also want them to be smooth enough to drink as a sipping gin, but robust enough to stand up to a premium tonic!” AFC Energy CEO Adam Bond added: “Hydrogen fuel cell technologies can be implemented today across a wide-range of applications as demonstrated by our collaboration with our neighbours at The Surrey Copper Distillery. The Copperfield gin harnesses the ingenuity of two local businesses to demonstrate creative ways in which clean hydrogen can be used to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and support the transition to a zero-carbon future.” To make each batch, they combine their brilliant Hills & Harbour gin with a full wheelbarrow of smoked pineapple and burnt oranges to create a 40% ABV sweet spirit that can be turned bitter, balanced or sweet simply by adding tonic, soda or lemonade respectively.

A leading provider of hydrogen power generation technologies, AFC Energy have supplied a H-Power Tower used to distill the Copperfield gin. It produces electricity from hydrogen, resulting in much lower CO 2emissions throughout the distilling process than what is typically used. Juniper rich, lightly floral with woody spice Copperfield London Dry Gin is round and smooth with good complexity and length. Fill the basin one-third full with the pudding mix, then pop the orange into it. Add the rest of the pudding mix around and on top of the orange and smooth over. Copperfield vol. 1, their flagship gin, is a supremely high-quality spirit – rich with juniper and exceptionally smooth. It is handcrafted in small batches in a traditional copper pot, and its botanicals (Orris Root, Angelica, Liquorice, Coriander, Lemon Peel) are straight from the 1757 edition of the original distilling book, ‘The Complete Distiller’ – about as traditional as it’s possible to get. Katherine stumbled across this original recipe when building her distilling library, and resurrected it. You can even see the original 18th century scribbles on the inside of the bottle label. Working with specialist spirits branding agency, Stranger & Stranger, the ‘Social Distillery’ has created something which is the envy of many. They wanted to produce something which depicts the truly stunning scenery found on the island – and what a job they’ve done!Remove the orange from the saucepan and save 250ml of the cooking liquid. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Let’s start with a traditional gin. You can tell a lot about a distillery and its products from the people behind it. In the case of Surrey Copper Distillery, the husband and wife founders are nothing short of experts – true distilling nerds. Equally distinctive is the beautiful bottle that Hollie has designed for their gin. Kensington grandeur at its finest, and a delightful addition to any drinks cabinet. The special edition ‘Copperfield H 2 Gin’ is being produced in a limited initial batch of 500 bottles and went on sale today.

A measure of Copperfield London Dry Gin poured over ice, add a premium tonic water and garnish with fresh lemon peel and a single mint leafSo Copperfield London Gin is rather good. It’s fairly classic, I’d say, and balanced — not trying to do anything too funky. Its flavour isn’t dominated by a particular characteristic, and as such, it’s a versatile beast. So let’s put it through the usual tests, shall we? Copperfield Gin and Tonic The partnership between the two companies in creating this unique gin is said to showcase the exciting innovation happening across Britain, as well as highlighting how hydrogen could support the decarbonisation of many of the UK’s gin distilleries. Chris and Katherine are avid collectors of rare and antiquarian books. Surrey Copper Distillery is inspired by literature, and Cooper’s book was the first manual to the art of distillation and remains an important reference work to this day.
