About this deal

Example:'The habitat is on forest or swamp.' This player knows the habitat is on a forest space or a swamp space, so would place discs on those spaces. The player knows the habitat cannot be on any other terrain type, so would place cubes on spaces with any other terrain type. If you choose to search for the creature on your turn, take the pawn, place it on a spot on the board and declare a search, placing one of your discs immediately on the space (if one of your discs is already on the space you are searching, then you’ll place one somewhere else on the board that could also be the space.) Cryptid is a perfectly family friendly game that you can enjoy playing with just about anyone, but due to the reading element and the need for total independence in play, players will most likely need to be about 10-12 to be able to enjoy it themselves.

You aren’t limited in what you can do either. While the turns are simple, question or search, you can ask any player you’d like, even if someone just asked them on the turn before you, and select anywhere on the board to ask them for information. But even though this is simple, you still have a lot to think about before you do because if you ask them and they put out a cube then you also have to place one on the board. This gives everyone information about your clue and helps them.

Setup

If they placed a cube, you must now also place a cube on a different space which cannot be the habitat according to your clue. The turn now passes to the player on your left. Players begin by selecting a set of starting pieces and setting up the map with the help of one of the 54 cards in the desired difficulty level, (normal or advanced) or the free companion app.

If you play cautiously, questioning until you’re certain what each clue is, then you’ll also likely lose the game. These competing urges, trying to get perfect information but also trying to win before anyone else. Make each choice feel increasing weight and importance as you play. Final Thoughts on Cryptid For example, if your clue is 'within one space of a forest', that includes every forest space, and every space which touches a forest space. Personally, I have yet to feel like I’ve needed to use paper and pen to help, but other players we have played with have found this very helpful. I recommend playing your first game without the use of paper and seeing how it goes. There are such a wide variety of clues that just because a player places a cube on, say, a water space, it doesn’t mean that the creature can’t be in the water, it may be because the water space is too far away from a structure, or a desert space, or perhaps an animal territory. You could write something down one turn, and then be erasing it just seconds later depending on how the game progresses. How does it play with two?I believe calculation can add much to a game, but only when it furthers other goals. The oppressive atmosphere of Tragedy Looper and the communication challenges of Hanabiare good examples of it. These games feature misdirection, trust, risk. Running up the numbers is a tool, not the only feature. In comparison, Cryptid seems dull and lifeless.

The wooden player components markers are nice, vibrant, well made pieces. They are simple, but I appreciate that they aren’t too big or too distracting as you’ll have quite a few of them on the board as the game goes on. The only components that left me feeling a bit disappointed was the searching pawn marker and structure pieces. While they work fine for the game’s purpose, I would have liked to see a tad bit more production in them. Especially the pawn. Not designing it to look like the creature on the box art seems like a bit of a miss. That would be a lot more exciting and added some fun to the board. I don’t want people to read this thinking it is a negative review. There is a lot to enjoy about the game. If you’re a fan of puzzle games, this will very much be up your street. My biggest issue comes down to it being sold as a deduction game. Finally beware of the scarecrow, do not get too close them or they'll suddenly give chase! They'll stalk you from just out of your vision range and take small movements whilst visible.the mistake immediately changes their piece on that space. They must also move the piece they removed to another legal space. This can take place during other players' turns, not just when the player who made a mistake is the active player. Over the course of the game, players will place cubes or discs of their color in different spaces on the board. A cube means this space could not be the habitat according to that player's clue. A disc means this space could be the habitat according to that player's clue. The only way to win the game is to search on the space which contains the habitat. If you come into Urban Legends expecting a two-player, abstract, tug-of-war, I think you’re going to love it. If you’re expecting clues, a process of elimination, and some real gosh-darned deduction, you’re going to be disappointed. One thing’s for sure though, and that this game is an attractive little creature. The cubes and discs are irresistibly tactile, and Kwanchai Moriya’s artwork is – as always – fantastic. Final thoughts From the start Cryptid does a lot to impress. I didn’t realise a game box could feel nice, now I want all my boxes to feel like this one. The game has a vibrant and interesting design that allows you to tell the terrain types apart. The pieces are wooden with standard cubes, the discs are nice and chunky. The big misstep is that two of the player colours are too similar and in low light are very hard to tell apart. If you mistake one of these colours for the other, then the game will be unsolvable.

On a player's turn they will question one other player. The question is always ‘Could the Cryptid live in this space?”. Cubes and discs are placed on the board to show that it either could or couldn’t live there. If a player answers no to your question by placing a cube then you also must place a cube, giving away valuable information about what you know. If the space works for both of your clues, you need to place discs from both colors on the spot. However, if the space does work for one of your clues but not the other, you’ll place the cube on the space and will NOT place the disc. When a space does not work for either of your clues, then you get to choose which cube to place on the space, not both.As fast as your brain will be moving to keep up with all the information, the game itself will take on a pace that is a seemingly-oxymoronic mix of brisk and languid. Individual turns may bog down as players stare, brows furrowed, trying to make sense of the flotsam of information they have, but the game itself never feels strained. The reason for that is, in as much as you choose where to guess and who to ask on your turn, the answers players give are public knowledge.
